Blue Devils Drop OT Thriller, 6-5

A classic game played out last Saturday afternoon as the Cold Spring Harbor boys' lacrosse team topped Huntington in double overtime, 6-5 before a crowd of more than 1,200 at Blue Devil Stadium.

Under a bright sky on a beautiful spring day, Huntington goalie T.J Greenhill put on an amazing display, stopping 15 shots, sometimes in dramatic fashion. An aggressive Blue Devil defense was relentless, much to the crowd's delight, helping the home team keep pace in the fast-moving game.

Jack Cutrone led Huntington's offense with two goals. Thomas Mulligan, Billy Martin and Pat Reilly also scored. Dan Plant contributed an assist. Seahawks goalie Chris Roufanis recorded 13 saves in the face of a ferocious Blue Devil offense.

The two teams exchanged the lead several times during the afternoon contest. Huntington came close to scoring in the final seconds of regulation, but was stymied and the game went into sudden victory overtime. After a scoreless first OT period, the Seahawks scored early in the second frame to notch a hard fought victory.

Huntington led 2-1 after the first period and was ahead 3-2 at halftime. Cold Spring Harbor came out strong in the second half, scoring two quick goals to take a 4-3 lead. Huntington rallied in the fourth period to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The annual Diabetes Shootout between the teams raises money to support the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Huntington Booster Club's apparel trailer was parked near the field and the group also sold food and refreshments. Stadium music blared over the public address system.

MSG Varsity was on hand to film the game with a play-by-play announcer located in the press box and on-field pre-game, halftime and post-game interviews. The game will be televised during the week.

Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky watched the game from the sidelines and several Huntington School Board members were among the faces in the huge crowd, which included retired Blue Devil coach Steve Davis.

"The two teams played a really great game," Polansky said.
