The Huntington junior varsity girls’ softball team enjoyed a delightful late season 10-5 victory over Kings Park behind the skilled pitching of Melissa Cohen. Courtney Lawrence, Haley Brown, Christine Powers, Emily Kata, Alison Ortiz and Mallory Martilla turned in some great plays in the field. Cohen also blasted a three-run home run. Reba Alligood also contributed to the big win.
Merilan Medals at Bulldog Invitational
Dania Merilan finished second in the 100m and fourth in the 200m to pace the Huntington girls’ track and field team at the Bulldog Invitational at Hewlett High School.
Lauren Visbal placed third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Alexandra Martinolich was sixth in the 400m intermediate hurdles. Celine Takekoshi was sixth in the 800m run.
Kerri-Ann Giambruno ran as a Blue Devil in the competition’s “mascot” race. Huntington head coach Debra Cheskes said Giambruno turned in an “outstanding performance.”
Scully Gets Feet Wet
Matte Scully got her feet wet as a freshman season on the Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team this spring. After a fine career at Huntington High School on the Blue Devil soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams, Scully has settled into college very nicely.
A business major, Scully scored her first collegiate goal against Columbia University, picked up her first ground ball against Loyola and recorded her first draw control against Johns Hopkins. She has played attack and midfield.
Scully’s older sister, Casey, is an offensive lacrosse star at Iona College and her younger sister, Shea is currently enrolled at Huntington High School. Her father, Mike was an All-Ivy League linebacker at Cornell University and her mother, Carol, played soccer at Penn State. Her uncle John was an All-American center at Notre Dame who went on to play 10 years in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons. Another uncle, Dan, played football at Cornell.
Bilzi Nets First Goal
Huntington High School Class of 2009 alum Kevin Bilzi played in five games at midfield this spring for the Hamilton College men’s lacrosse team. The 5’7, 165 lb. Bilzi scored the first goal of his collegiate career on April 24 in a 17-5 victory at SUNY College at Morrisville. He took eight shots over the course of the season and scooped up four ground balls. Hamilton finished the year with a 10-4 record.
Bilzi was an outstanding student at Huntington High School, graduating near the top of his class. He earned the Donald A. Loughlin Founder’s Award, which is named for the man who started the Blue Devil lacrosse program.
Bilzi captained the Huntington lax team as a senior. His family has long been associated with Huntington High School. His father, Tom, graduated in 1972 and his brother, Brian (2003) and sister, Claire (2006) are also counted among the school’s alumni. There’s also Leo (1925) Victoria (1935), Angelo (1935), Helen (1939), William (1941), George (1943), Isabel (1944), Steven (1968), Ellen (1970), Carol (1972), Patrice (1975) and Jill (1979).
