Johnson Wins Suffolk Division II Crown
Tyriek Johnson won the Suffolk Division II 110m high hurdles crown, sweeping across the finish line in 14.56 seconds, his best time of the year. The effort paced a string of good performances by the Huntington High School boys’ track and field team at the divisional championship meet held over a two-day period at Connetquot.
Johnson, a sensational sophomore, also medaled in the long jump with a leap of 20’7, good enough for fourth place in the tough competition. Chris Sandoval finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 130’7 as teammates Trayvon Toney and Dante Allen placed eighth and 13th, respectively, in the same event.
Ryan Ackerman turned in a great effort to finish ninth in the 800m run in 2:03. Richie Fernandez, a relative newcomer to the sport, placed seventh in the shot put after launching it 43’6. Toney (11th, 41’6) and Allen (16th, 40’4) also placed in the top 20 in the shot put.
“The big surprise came when the young 4 x 800m relay team of eighth grader Tyler Wolfe, freshman Danny Benitez and sophomores Ryan Ackerman and Stephan Dietrich, broke nine minutes with a new best team time of 8:46 to place eighth overall,” Wilson said. In other events, Eric Szilagy placed eighth in the triple jump after soaring 41’5. Wolfe was 11th in the 1600m run in 4:47.
Huntington’s top performers will compete in the state qualifying meet this weekend at Port Jefferson High School. Wilson said he’s hoping for some breakout performances.
