Up-and-Down Season for Huntington Softball
High hopes for the season were dashed as the Huntington varsity girls’ softball team battled its way through an uneven year, compiling a 6-13 record.
The 14-player Blue Devil squad was led by senior All-Conference pitcher Samantha Jacoby and sophomore All-League shortstop Laurelle Byrne-Cody.
“We had a young team this year,” Walsh said about the group that was captained by Jacoby, Byrne-Cody, sophomore Jackie Harrington and senior Chloe Gray.
Walsh, who was assisted by Joe Felpo, would have liked to see a few more victories, yet couldn’t help but be happy with the team’s play over the final two weeks. Huntington went 3-2 over a five game stretch, with the losses coming in tough 2-0 and 3-0 games.
Jacoby was the Blue Devils’ mainstay on the mound, hurling three no-hitters and a one-hitter and striking out 105 batters. “Sam helped carry the team to all of its victories,” Walsh said.
Byrne-Cody banged out 19 hits and batted .350. “Laurelle is on the verge of becoming a star,” Walsh said. Gray, a talented second baseman, turned in a sterling season, swatting out 19 hits and compiling a .343 batting average.
Looking ahead to the future, Huntington’s coach has a solid grip on his roster, its strengths and weaknesses and where he would like to take the program. But, first things first; “The team needs to make a commitment in the off-season,” Walsh said.
Will next spring see the Blue Devils qualifying for the post-season? “We have 11 returning players,” Walsh said. “We must work hard in the winter in order to compete in the spring.”
