Junior Emilie Pugliese had a career high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team over Comsewogue, 13-8. The Blue Devil offense also received help from Danielle Catanese (2g, 1a), Allison Thompson (1g, 2a), Hannah Burnett (1g) and Alison Mehring (1g), Angela Bosco (1g), Emma Hayes-Hurley (1g, 1a), Michaela Brown (1g, 1a), Meredith McCourt (1a) and Colleen Wright (1a).
Huntington jumped out to a 7-2 first half lead before the two teams scored six goals apiece in the second frame. Karly Kocis, who is headed to St. Bonaventure on a lacrosse scholarship, recorded 19 saves in goal.
Trayvon Toney Earns Award
The Huntington football program’s annual awards dinner drew a large crowd of players and parents. Among the honors presented was the John Paci, Jr. Award. It is presented to the most outstanding offensive back we have on the team. Trayvon Toney, this year’s recipient, showed a tremendous amount of talent on the field.
Coach Paci, a former teacher and head varsity coach of Huntington High School devoted the majority of his time coaching the offensive backs. He coached two Hansen Award winners in his career, including his own son, John Paci III, who went on to star at Indiana University and play in the NFL and NFL-Europe.
Huntington Boys’ Lax Falls
John Glenn High School jumped out to an early 6-1 lead en route to downing the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team, 10-3. The Blue Devils picked up goals from Tyre Brown, Nick Saputo and Duncan Murchison. Saputo also added two assists. Goalie Andrew Sheerin recorded nine saves.
Finley Wrestlers Tough
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School wrestling team closed out the season with 43 athletes on its roster. Coached by Lou R. Giani and Hugh Norton, the Falcons were led by Andre Harris, Jacob Watkins, Bryan Murchison, Carlos Pereira, Josh Watkins, Kyle Mock, Devonte Evans, Alex Alvarenga, Mike Senia, Brandon Mendez, Brian Peer and Austin Dunn.
Mock completed the season with a 10-0 record and Harris finished at 9-1. Giani called the team a “good group of athletes.”
Big Day for Visbal
Blue Devil record-holder Lauren Visbal enjoyed a successful start to the spring track and field season when she won three separate events in Huntington’s 89-52 victory over Harborfields. Visbal also ran a leg on the Blue Devils’ wining 4 x 100m relay team that swept across the finish line in 54.6 seconds.
Visbal captured the long jump (16’4), high jump (5’1) and triple jump (33’10), much to the delight of Huntington head coach Debra Cheskes.
Lopez Wins Steve Henry Award
Huntington senior Luis Lopez won the varsity football team’s Steve Henry Award for his unselfish loyalty, individual leadership and ability overcome to great adversity. The award, formerly known as the 12th Man Award, is presented to the player who through unselfish loyalty, individual leadership and the ability to overcome great adversity to play football.
Coach Henry is a current teacher and former Huntington football coach. He taught all of his players to be loyal and honest. “Coach Henry is the most loyal person you will ever find here in Huntington,” assistant coach Ron Wilson said. “He continues to devote his time to Huntington football.”
Jacoby is Unstoppable
The Huntington girls’ softball team has endured some early season struggles, but pitcher Samantha Jacoby was unstoppable in leading the Blue Devils past Comsewogue, 12-3.
Jacoby fanned 17 batters, walked two and surrendered only one hit on the hill. She also belted out three hits, including a homerun, drove in three runs and scored twice. Laurell Byrne-Cody picked up four hits and an RBI and scored twice and Chloe Gray added three hits, including a pair of doubles and drove in a run. The performances had head coach John Walsh smiling.
