HHS Artists on Exhibit at High Arts Showcase XII

Nine Huntington High School student-artists are currently exhibiting work at the Huntington Arts Council’s High Arts Showcase XII at the Main Street Gallery in the village.

An opening reception was held on Friday, March 4. The exhibit, which will run through March 19, showcases the work of several dozen gifted junior and senior artists from six Long Island school districts that participate in the Huntington Arts Council’s Journey program, “which fosters the appreciation of cultural diversity through the arts.”

“The artistic talents of our students and staff are beyond highly regarded,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Those viewing our students’ work are typically in awe of the gallery-quality products created at the high school level. The Huntington Arts Council staff knows this firsthand. We appreciate the Council’s efforts in coordinating the Journey program and for providing a local professional venue within which the efforts of our student-artists can be recognized and appreciated by members of the greater community. Please don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit the exhibit at the Council’s Main Street Gallery before it ends on March 19.”

The work on display at High Arts Showcase XII reflects a variety of media and an “exceptional level of talent,” according to the Huntington Arts Council. Located at 213 Main Street in Huntington village, the Main Street Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Admission is free.

“Congratulations to our nine high school students and their teachers for showcasing their talents at this year’s High Arts Showcase,” said Sara Loveland Gill, Huntington’s district director of fine and performing arts. “It is wonderful to see the Huntington Arts Council exhibit featuring local student work. The future of arts in Huntington is in great hands!”

The Huntington student-artists were thrilled to have pieces chosen for the exhibit. “It was such an honor to be selected,” said Ms. Breitbarth, who worked with model Gabriella Levinson. “I love photography and I am so glad people got to see one of my photos.”

The teenagers have all developed close relationships with their teachers and spend countless hours outside of school honing their skills and pursuing their craft.

“I’m very honored that Mrs. Piffard chose my photograph for the High Arts Showcase XII, she has always encouraged me to develop my photographic skills, as have Ms. Judson and Mrs. [Heather] Swan,” Ms. Miller said. “This show is an amazing opportunity to get exposure for my artwork. While at the opening I had the chance to speak with the new executive director of the Huntington Arts Council, Marc Courtade. While speaking with Mr. Courtade he congratulated me on being chosen and expressed great interest in my photography. He also encouraged me to continue my photographic education. He mentioned the importance of entering juried art shows in the future. This was the fourth time I’ve had art work selected for a show at the Huntington Arts Council. I am very grateful that we have an organization such as this in our community.”

The nine Huntington students with pieces on display in the showcase are joined by top artists from the Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Harborfields, Northport-East Northport, South Huntington and Plainview-Old Bethpage school districts.

“The Huntington Arts Council established the Journey program in 1985 as a means of integrating cultural arts into classroom curriculum,” states the organization’s website. “Journey is a multi-cultural arts-in-education program developed by the Huntington Arts Council in partnership with school districts.”
