Teacher Lynn Hefele Honored at Awards Dinner

Lynn Hefele was recently honored at the annual professional awards dinner of the Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The Southdown Primary School physical education teacher was recognized as the Suffolk Zone’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year.
“I am proud that Huntington has such a talented educator and that she has been recognized for all of her hard work,” said Huntington School District Director of Physical Education, Health and Interscholastic Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy in remarks read at last week’s awards dinner.
“Lynn has worked tirelessly to create and implement the best lessons and programs for all of her students throughout the district,” Ms. McCarthy said. “Lynn not only sets the bar high for her students, she never settles when it comes to her relentless love to learn and research the wonderful world of physical education.”
Vice president of New York AHPERD’s Suffolk Zone for elementary/middle school, Mrs. Hefele earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Springfield College in physical education and movement science with a concentration in biomechanics, respectively. Founder and president of Literature Enhanced Physical Education, Inc., she has written and published many books over the past seven years.
“One example of how Lynn was so ahead of the game was her dream to write books that incorporated literacy and math in physical education,” Ms. McCarthy said. “This was way before Common Core was on anyone’s radar, especially physical educators. Well, Lynn accomplished this dream and continues to as she has published seven books and I believe she has the eighth on the way.”
The veteran Huntington teacher and athletic coach also writes for PElinks4u.org and manages Elementary PE+ on Linkedin. Mrs. Hefele is a member of the US Games Presenters Network and also produces the Phys Ed Audio Blog.
On behalf of all of Lynn’s students and fellow colleagues, I want to congratulate her for this incredible honor,” Ms. McCarthy said. “It is well deserved. We love you Lynn.”
