H-ton Alum Jessica Tucker Catches Alabama’s Spirit

Few freshman can duplicate the start to their college experience that Jessica Tucker has enjoyed. The Huntington High School grad is a freshman at the University of Alabama, which won the football national championship and helped create a festive atmosphere on the campus throughout the fall and into January.

Ms. Tucker went to Alabama because she wanted to be in the warm weather and attend a school loaded with spirit and a major college football program.

“The fall semester went great,” Ms. Tucker said. “So many exiting things went on such as rushing my sorority (Zeta Tau Alpha), going to all of the football games and then becoming national champions and making so many new close friends.”

Ms. Tucker has decided to major in advertising. “I took many classes last semester that helped me with that along with some others,” she said. “I took English 101, mass communications, computer science, journalism and psychology. This semester I am taking English 102, two different advertising and public relations) classes, another journalism class, theater and math.”

The Huntington alum’s well-rounded high school experience included sports and various extracurricular activities in addition to her work as a Natural Helper, assisting classmates struggling with personal issues. She won a Best Actor Award in Huntington’s Playfest and garnered the Postive Spirit Award on the track team.

“My general impressions on Alabama are it is a great school and I made an amazing decision when I was deciding on what school to attend,” Ms. Tucker said. “All of my professors are amazing, the classes are rigorous, which allows me to learn so many new things and the football experience is like no other.”

The teenager said she is “very involved” on the Alabama campus through her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. “Our philanthropy is breast cancer awareness and education, so we host many charitable events on campus,” Ms. Tucker said. “We have organized a flag football tournament where we coach and run games between the fraternities with all of the proceeds going to our philanthropy. We also have organized Think Pink gymnastics meets and girls’ basketball games where the proceeds have gone to our philanthropy as well.”

Ms. Tucker and her fellow sorority members coordinated a unique event that involved participants making quilts and later donating presenting them to breast cancer patients.
