H-ton Alum Tyler Burton Settles into UMass Amherst

It’s didn’t take very long for Tyler Burton to settle into the University of Massachusetts Amherst and feel right at home. The Huntington High School Class of 2015 member is thriving as a college freshman.

“My fall semester at UMass was amazing,” Ms. Burton said. “The transition from our high school to a school this big was a little challenging, but I have adjusted and have been having a great experience so far.”

Ms. Burton participated in Huntington’s dual language program, beginning her journey at Southdown Primary School as a kindergartener. By the time she graduated last June, the teenager had completed a long list of honors and Advanced Placement courses and compiled one of the most spectacular academic records of any senior.

“This spring, I am taking 16 credits altogether and my classes consist of Chemistry 111, Calculus 127, Public Health 160, and Kinesiology 100,” Ms. Burton said. “I am hoping to declare a major in kinesiology by the end of the spring semester.”

Widely known for always placing others first, Ms. Burton was a three-year member of Huntington’s Relay For Life organizing committee, a four-year Natural Helper and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer.

A contributing member of the Blue Devil girls’ varsity soccer team, Ms. Burton enjoyed rewarding relationships with Huntington coaches John Walsh and Vincent Tannazzo.

Ms. Burton’s personality easily attracts friends. She is a warm, giving and friendly young woman who is loyal, sincere and compassionate. Her sister is a junior at UMass Amherst.

The Huntington alum has settled into life on the college campus quite nicely. “To make my transition easier, I decided to go Greek,” Ms. Burton said. “I joined a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma and have met an amazing group of girls. Going Greek enabled me to meet so many people, which makes the school seem much smaller. Overall, I love it here so far!”
