Officials Pore Over Huntington Graduation Stats

Huntington High School’s Class of 2015 has dispersed to all points, with most members enrolled in college or pursuing career or technical programs. District officials are studying a set of statistics that has been compiled on the most recent group of teenagers to earn diplomas.

The Class of 2015 totaled 297 graduates with 70 percent of them now attending four-year colleges, 21 percent now studying at two year colleges and another nine percent opting to pursue immediate employment, vocational programs, military service or a “gap” year for traveling or personal growth.

The statistics were compiled by Kitty R. Klein, district director of guidance, K-12 and shared with building and department leaders, guidance counselors and members of the central administration and Huntington School Board.

The figures show that 43 percent of the Class of 2015 earned Regent’s diplomas, 25 percent qualified for an advanced Regent’s diploma and another 25 percent garnered an advanced Regent’s diploma with honors. Two percent of graduates were given Regent’s diplomas with honors. Four percent of last year’s seniors earned local diplomas and one percent received SACC diplomas (which replaced IEP diplomas.

The approximately 91-plus cohort June graduation rate is the highest the district has experienced in a number of years. Officials have stated they are determined to drive the rate higher in coming years.
