Huntington Senior Sam Latt Pursues Math Internship

Samuel Latt is good at math and just might make it a career. So, the Huntington High School senior has set aside some time in his daily class schedule to pursue an internship with veteran teacher Kathy Aufiero.

The credit bearing experience began earlier this month and Mr. Latt is prepared for wherever it might take him. “I’d like to pursue a career in mathematics and want to explore my options,” the teenager said. “I’m still not sure what I want to study in college, but I know that I want to study something math-based.”

It was no accident that Mr. Latt happened to secure an internship with Mrs. Aufiero, the two have developed a good relationship with each other. “I thought Mrs. Aufiero would be a great mentor because we get along well and have the same sense of humor,” the senior said. “I had her as a teacher and enjoyed my time in her class. I was hoping to intern specifically for an Algebra 2 Trig class because it’s a rigorous course in which even the best math students tend to need help.”

Mr. Latt expects to teach some introductory lessons, grade papers, help struggling students one-on-one and generally act as a teacher’s assistant. He’ll report to Mrs. Aufiero’s room daily for the internship.

The teenager is spending time reviewing possible colleges for the next stage of his educational journey. While he hasn’t made any final decisions, Mr. Latt is currently looking at Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Brown, Emory and Binghamton, “but, I’m still doing more research and finalizing my list,” he said
