Fishlow & McCartney Compete in TOBAY Triathlon

Jamie Fishlow and Caroline McCartney aren’t afraid of a challenge. That’s a good thing because competing in a triathlon requires physical and mental strength and more than a little courage.

A longtime Huntington High School physical education teacher and tennis coach, Mr. Fishlow is an experienced triathlete, completing many such events, including “ironman” versions that require a 2.4 mile open water swim, 112 mile bicycle ride and 26.2 mile marathon without any breaks between segments.

The Runner’s Edge TOBAY triathlon consisted of a half-mile swim in Oyster Bay Harbor, 15K (9.3 miles) bicycle ride through Oyster Bay, Laurel Hollow and Cove Neck and a 5K (3.1 mile) run through Mill Neck and Brookville to Planting Fields Arboretum and back to Roosevelt Park. Not as intimidating as an “ironman,” but still a challenge by almost any standard.

Ms. McCartney, a Huntington senior, is rapidly becoming one of the best young triathletes on Long Island. She finished second in the 15-19 year old age group in the Runner’s Edge TOBAY triathlon and continued her ascendancy in the sport.

“This summer she trained hard and she also got a new racing bike, which helped her tremendously on race day,” said Mr. Fishlow, who himself participated in the triathlon as a member of a relay team on which he swam and biked.

The Huntington duo raced under Mr. Fishlow’s Tri for All Triathlon Coaching banner. “I am looking to bring back the Blue Devil triathlon club this year and will be looking for more students to race with us,” he said.
