Blue Devil Sports News
Huntington junior varsity baseball players enjoyed a summer on the diamond. The team reached the semi-finals of the District 34 senior league tournament. It was the only squad to hand the first place team a loss all season when Steven Napurano tossed a no-hitter. In another game, Matt Montefusco threw a two-hitter to claim the victory.
The team was led offensively by Marco Caporuscio, Tom Stock and Napurano. Michael Harris and Ethan Copp displayed standout defense. Tyler Gerbavsits, Michael Marziliano, Christian Gallagher, Luke Eidle, Elian Pimental and Manny Anastos rounded out the exceptional Huntington contingent.
The Huntington group was successful despite playing up a year in the 16 under league. Most of the players were 14-15 years old.
Alumni Basketball Game Planned
Huntington High School boys’ basketball team alumni will be suiting up once again. An alumni game has been scheduled for Friday, November 27 at 4 p.m. in the school gym.
Interest in the game is already running high among former players who are excited at the thought of returning to the court and playing with their teammates from yesteryear.
“The game is scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving in the hope that as many alumni as possible will be in town for the holiday,” head coach Brian Carey said. A mandatory post-game meeting at Finnegan’s Restaurant in Huntington village is planned.
Alumni that want to play in the game should send an e-mail to Director of Athletics Georgia Deren McCarthy at bluedevilathletics@hufsd.edu. Players should include their name, graduation year, t-shirt size and whether they plan to attend the post-game meeting at Finnegan’s Restaurant.
All players will receive an alumni game t-shirt. Organizers are spreading the word with the hope of reaching as many former players, coaches and managers as possible. All are invited to come to the game and catch-up with their old friends and teammates. Several former coaches are expected to attend the game.
Organizers are asking alumni players who have graduated from college for a $25 donation. Cash/checks are due on game day. Proceeds will benefit the Huntington basketball program. (Additional contributions are also welcome.)

The Huntington High School boys’ volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 victory over Center Moriches. After dropping the first game, 25-19, the Blue Devils won consecutive 25-13, 25-21 and 25-19 games in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Wilbur Parada Scores Twice
Wilbur Parada scored two goals and Carlos Rivera added a third to lift the Huntington boys’ soccer team over host West Islip, 3-1. The Blue Devils led at halftime, 2-1. Kevin Gulizio picked up an assist. Goalie Nat Amato made five saves. West Islip goalie Brandon Isolano stopped six Huntington shots. The game was halted with about 16 minutes remaining due to lightning.
Taylor Moreno Scores Winning Goal
The Huntington girls’ soccer team nipped Centereach, 1-0 in a hard fought game when goalie Taylor Moreno blasted a free kick into the net from 20 yards with 2.7 seconds remaining in the second half.
Playing before a crowd of about 200 at Blue Devil Stadium last Friday afternoon, Moreno was summoned to take the free kick by Huntington head coach John Walsh. Should she have missed, it would have been necessary to sprint back to her goalie position before Centereach could get downfield and score.
Moreno also recorded six saves in the game and picked up her second shutout in three games. Centereach goalie Annalie Buscario stopped 12 Blue Devil shots.
Huntington players gave their all on a very warm day. The Blue Devils had several opportunities to score, but couldn’t convert any of them. When Moreno got her chance, she put the ball high and out of the reach of Buscarino.
New PE Teacher & Athletic Coach
Elizabeth Vogelsang has joined the Huntington School District’s faculty and coaching staff as a part-time physical education teacher and high school girls’ volleyball coach.
Ms. Vogelsang earned a Bachelor of Science degree at SUNY Cortland in physical education in 2013. Prior to coming to Huntington, she worked as a per diem substitute in Islip and a permanent substitute in South Huntington at Countrywood Primary Center.
District officials reviewed 32 applications, pre-screened 16 candidates and conducted eight extensive interviews prior to recommending Ms. Vogelsang for appointment.
Blue Devils Drop OT Verdict
Smithtown West has a very good girls’ soccer team, but Huntington gave the visitors everything they could handle through 80 minutes of regulation play.
It wasn’t until the first 10 minute overtime period that Smithtown West finally managed to put the ball in the net directly off a corner kick with 7:14 remaining in the initial OT. A breakaway goal followed in the second overtime to seal the victory.
Huntington managed only two shots on Smithtown West goalie Bernadette Savino. Blue Devil goalkeeper Taylor Moreno recorded 15 saves.
