Huntington Students Take
875 AP Exams

Huntington High School students took 875 Advanced Placement exams during the 2015/16 school year as an increasing number of teenagers opted to challenge themselves.

A year-to-year comparison indicates Huntington students took 93 more AP exams this past year than they did in 2013/14. In 2011, Huntington students took only 510 AP exams.

Huntington can boast about having 59 AP Scholars, 26 AP Scholars with Honors and 40 AP Scholars with Distinction. Among the group of honorees are 11 national AP Scholars.

“It is testament to the efforts of Huntington High School students, teachers and counselors that there has been a 72 percent increase in Advanced Placement enrollment and continued impressive performance since 2011,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Students clearly recognize the importance of challenging themselves academically as they prepare themselves for the rigors of post-secondary academia. Teachers continue to spark student interests as they help them to reach their academic potential. A collective recipe for success!”

To qualify as an AP Scholar, a student must score a 3 or higher on three or more Advanced Placement exams. Students must have an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams to earn the AP Scholar with Honor designation. To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction necessitates a minimum average grade of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more such tests.

A district tracking report indicates that the overall number of AP Scholars has increased by 46 since 2011 while the ranks of AP Scholars with Honor have grown by 14.

Impressively, 11 Huntington students garnered National AP Scholar awards. To do so requires an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these difficult tests. In the past five years the school has had 47 National AP Scholars after having just 28 in the seven year period from 2004 to 2010.

Huntington also had one International AP Scholar for the first time.
