H-ton Alum Finds Happiness at
New College

There’s never a dull moment in the life of Huntington High School alum Stephanie Shea. The Class of 2014 member initially headed off to Pace University, where she completed 35 credits worth of classes and performed at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall, but she found the college just wasn’t for her.

Ms. Shea is now a New York University sophomore after transferring to the Washington Square campus in Greenwich Village. She loves living in Manhattan and enjoys taking advantage of all the music and theatre opportunities that New York City offers.

“College is really different than how I pictured it,” the Huntington alum said last year before she decided to transfer. “When I applied to schools, I was only concerned with the colleges having the major I thought I wanted at the time. I didn’t think about the fact that other factors like campus location and activity opportunities were very important, too.”

Ms. Shea applied to a variety of colleges as an English education transfer student. “While I did learn quite a bit at Pace, it wasn’t the perfect fit,” she said. “After hearing back from all of my transfer applications and weighing the pros and cons, I am now a proud member of the NYU Steinhardt Class of 2018. I’m in a secondary English education program, on a master’s degree track and I am interested in a business minor and a music minor.”

The Huntington grad is currently taking vocal lessons at NYU and she has signed up for many clubs, including Relay For Life, Habitat for Humanity and Key Club. She is even auditioning for multiple music ensembles and drama clubs.

“I absolutely love living in New York City and I recommend everyone look into NYU,” Ms. Shea said. “Both as an incoming student and as a transfer, it has a lot to offer.”

While at Pace, Ms. Shea performed at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall in Parade by Jason Robert Brown and under his direction. But, while she flourished at her initial choice for college, she knew she wanted even more over the course of the experience.

“This semester, I am taking behavioral statistics, religion & public education in an international context, literature as an exploration, Spanish 2, a new transfer student seminar and field observations in schools in addition to private vocal lessons for a total of 18 credits,” Ms. Shea said. “It’s only been a few days of classes, but I already know this is the place I belong!”
