Southdown Celebrates Summer
Reading Challenge

Southdown Primary School Principal Scott Oshrin knows that strong reading skills are essential for a bright future for the hundreds of students in his building. Teachers and support staff members share the same belief. So the youngsters receive encouragement from every possible angle.

Mr. Oshrin and his teaching staff encourage parents to do their part, too. Reading at home is just as important as reading in school. The summer months are especially important since most students are not enrolled in any academic programs. Getting these students to read is vital to maintaining and enhancing their reading skills.

Southdown reading teachers Heather Collura, Christina Droskoski and Megan Himmelman posed a summer challenge to students, asking them to read throughout July and August and to keep track of the minutes they spent engrossed in the books of their choice.

The youngsters returned to Southdown last month, excited to submit their reading logs. The students were recently honored during a school-wide assembly program.

The honorees include Lucas Pecci, James Buffa, Eli Soric, Dylan Proctor, Emma Polinsky, Ava Davis, Sam Soric, Matthew Emmanuele, Luca Triolo, DeAndre Elvir, Sophie Lange, Kiley Barch, Jada Joseph, Jake Amend, Daysis Chavez Turcios, Edgar Vidal, Grace Oliva, Ryan Donovan, Jaipreet Singh, Angie Uceda-Enamorado, Ariana James, Benjamin Edgar-McNerney, Alexandra Boeckmann, Marley Joseph and Markus Fehrenbacher.

Mr. Oshrin and Southdown’s teachers are working hard to develop a love for reading in every student, believing it will help pave their way to success in school and life.
