Blue Devil Sports Briefs
The Huntington field hockey team won its biggest game of the fall on Saturday at Riverhead when the Blue Devils edged the Blue Waves, 2-1.
Huntington (6-5 in Suffolk Division II and 6-6 overall) senior Meagan Plant broke a 1-1 tie when she scored within the circle at 15:18. The Blue Devil defense took over from there. Elizabeth Berejka scored in the first half for the Blue Devils.
Huntington goalkeeper Cara Sorrentino made eight saves. Riverhead (7-4) goalie Grace Dow stopped five Blue Devil shots.
Carlos Rivera is Unstoppable
The Huntington boys’ soccer team just keeps winning. The Blue Devils swept past Centereach on Tuesday afternoon, 4-1 to improve to 9-1-1 overall (7-1-1 in league play).
Huntington led at halftime, 2-1 and went on to score two unanswered goals in the second half. Carlos Rivera had two goals and an assist. Wilber Parada had a goal and three assists. Olvin Palma also scored. Nat Amato stopped five shots in goal for the Blue Devils.
Huntington is ranked No. 17 in the state among all Class AA schools by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association.
Blue Devils’ Win Streak Reaches 46
The Huntington golf team improved to 9-0 last week, defeating Bay Shore (9-0), West Islip (7-2) and Half Hollow Hills West (9-0) to run the Blue Devils’ winning streak to 46 since 2011.
Against Bay Shore, Blue Devil senior Jim Smoot shot a 2-over par 38 on the front nine holes at the Huntington Crescent Club. Sophomore Tyler Gerbavsits turned in a 3-over par 39.
In a multi-team match against West Islip and Hills West, Smoot shot a two-under par 34 with four birdies on the front nine at the Huntington Crescent Club to place Huntington.
The Blue Devils are coached by Michael Marinello.
H-ton Boys’ VB Tops SWR
The Blue Devil boys’ volleyball team turned back host Shoreham-Wading River, 20-25, 25-13, 25-18 and 26-24 for a 3-1 victory. It was Huntington’s fourth win of the season.
Dan Mollitor contributed 33 assists. Justin Martinolich had 19 “kills” and Vincent Fredericks added a dozen “kills.”
Plant Scores Twice to Pace Field Hockey
The Huntington field hockey team cruised past visiting North Babylon, 7-0. The Blue Devils held a 4-0 halftime lead and kept the pressure up in the second half.
Meghan Plant led Huntington with a pair of goals. Michaela Carnesi had a goal and an assist. Grace Curran, Lindsay McKenna, Emma DeGennaro and Jessica Greene also scored in the game. Alexa Cassar had an assist. Emma Alexander recorded seven saves in goal.
North Babylon goalie Dorothea Toku stopped 13 Huntington shots.
Frustrating Loss for H-ton Girls’ Soccer
The Huntington girls’ soccer team played against a very strong wind Friday afternoon and was almost relieved to be trailing only 1-0 at halftime. The Blue Devils were looking forward to having the same advantage during the 40 minute second half. It wasn’t meant to be.
A mere 3:45 into the second half, play was stopped due to thunder. The two teams were sent into the school for a 30 minute waiting period. Before play could resume, the referees called the game due to lightning. Taylor Moreno had four saves for the Blue Devils.
The loss dropped Huntington to 4-4-2 in Suffolk League III and 5-4-2 overall. First place West Islip improved to 8-1-2 in league play and 10-1-2 overall.
H-ton Football at Centereach
The Huntington (2-3) football team will take on host Centereach (3-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Blue Devils entered the season as the No. 9 seed among 14 teams in Suffolk Division II. Centereach is seeded No 14. Saturday’s game will be played on a turf field.
Section XI Facts
Section XI of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association is the governing body for interscholastic sports in Suffolk County. The organization serves 62 high schools, 77 middle schools and more than 83 student athletes, who play on more than 3,400 teams in 25,000 contests each school year.
Huntington School District Superintendent James W. Polansky is the Section XI president.
Blue Devil JV Field Hockey Coach
Huntington High School junior varsity field hockey coach Allison Conlon is working as a third grade long-term leave replacement substitute teacher at Flower Hill Primary School.
Ms. Conlon earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree at the University of Delaware in 2013. She has worked in the district as a per diem and long-term substitute teacher since September 2013.
District officials reviewed 12 applications, pre-screened six candidates and conducted four extensive interviews prior to recommending Ms. Conlon for appointment.
Booster Club Dinner on Friday
The Huntington Booster Club will hold its ninth annual dinner this Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. at the Huntington Crescent Club. The organization will honor Gil Smith, the founding coach of the Blue Devil boys’ and girls’ swimming programs and local businessmen, alumni and sports supporters John and Mike Connell.

The Huntington Booster Club has raised more than $400,000 for the district’s sports programs over the past nine years. The organization has funded numerous projects at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Huntington High School and awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in athletic team grants submitted by coaches. The group has also presented thousands of dollars in sportsmanship scholarships to graduating seniors each spring.
This year’s dinner will begin with a cocktail hour, including hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and continue with a delicious hot meal followed by dessert and presentations in honor of Coach Smith and the Connells and remarks by each of them. Many Huntington alumni and current coaches are expected to attend the affair.
