Washington Answers Call of Math Challenge

When Christine Lofaro challenged Washington Primary School students they didn’t cower. The school’s youngsters always stand tall, especially when put to the test academically.

Ms. Lofaro teaches math at Washington School. She offered third and fourth graders a chance to participate in the school’s October Math Challenge and 64 third and fourth graders quickly stepped forward.

When Washington Principal Marsha Neville took to the airwaves over the school’s public address system on Wednesday morning it was to congratulate six students who submitted the correct set of answers to the most recent Math Challenge.

The contest drew entries from 36 third graders and 28 fourth graders. Third graders Ca’Sheen Jones, Jibreel Murtaza and Jayden Roman were honored along with fourth graders Cristel Hernandez, Madelyn Ramirez and Neurdia Osias.

“These boys and girls did a great job,” Mrs. Neville said. She told the entire student body to “keep up the terrific math work.” There is little doubt that November will see even more participation in the monthly Math Challenge.

Washington, like its sister schools across the Huntington School District, is endeavoring to improve its performance levels in every academic discipline, including math. Mrs. Lofaro and classroom teachers are pulling out all the stops, working with students and trying to get them to reach high standards.

Teachers are meeting twice a month as an entire faculty as well as on respective grade levels to discuss strategies to lift academic performance and enhance classroom instruction. Teachers will also be participating in professional development activities throughout the year.
