Principal Presents Washington Ways Awards

Principal Marsha Neville enthusiastically congratulated twenty Washington Primary School students for their outstanding performance in the classroom and around the building during the month of April.

The Washington Ways initiative focuses on recognizing and rewarding positive behavior while encouraging students to be safe, respectful and responsible. Students across all grade levels are given various colored tickets by teachers and support staff members for exemplary behavior. The tickets can be presented to the youngsters throughout the day.

April’s honorees included Steven Zavala Cruz, Devin Splendorio, Robbie Campbell, Maayan Nechooshtan, Matthew James, Carly Gallagher, Sofia Van Arsdale, Zoe Selleri, Jonathan Roman, Joy Huang, Kyra Scott, Ben Oren, Jayson Martinez, Hannah Song, Carmine Carusone, Josh Redick, Pablo Luna, Angel Orellana, Gregory Gonzalez and Michael Ambrozy.

The entire classes of kindergarten teacher Melissa Mazzalonga and first grade teacher Kristen Thatcher were also recognized for their fine efforts.

“It was a delight to honor such a fine group of boys and girls,” Mrs. Neville said. “They set a fine example for their classmates. We are very proud of them. All of us are looking forward to a fantastic final two months to the school year.”

Students are acutely conscious of the Washington Ways program and the philosophy behind it. They are thrilled to be recognized with a colorful ticket. They quickly present the ticket to their classroom teacher so it can be credited to the youngster and love telling their parents about their recognition, too.

White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.

Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including in hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate. Mrs. Neville announces the names of the honorees over Washington’s public address system.

Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall.
