Huntington Seniors Earn PTSA Scholarships

The Huntington High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association concluded another successful year by awarding scholarships to graduating seniors Santiago Alzate, Tamesh Bryan and Mashal Zadran.

PTSA President Laura Mills spoke about the scholarships and this year’s recipients during Huntington’s senior academic awards ceremony in June. Each of the teenagers received $500 stipends.

The PTSA awards three scholarships annually. Recipients are chosen by the members of guidance department and the general faculty. The organization has a scholarship endowment fund and has been awarding scholarships for more than 25 years.

This year’s scholarships honored “three very deserving individuals who have been chosen because they have demonstrated academic achievement as well as good citizenship and character,” Mrs. Mills said. “The PTSA applauds your hard work and diligence as well as your desire to continue your education.”

Mr. Alzate is headed to Binghamton University in the fall. He credits his success to maintaining a balance between school, sports and clubs and having the support of his parents, friends and teachers. A starting player on the Blue Devil varsity soccer team he was also a Natural Helper, assisting classmates with their problems.

Named Academic All-County in soccer, Mr. Alzate compiled an enviable high school record, forging close relationships with his teachers along the way. He graduated as one of the top members of the Class of 2015.

Ms. Bryan plans to attend Long Island University in Brooklyn. She immigrated to the United States from Jamaica relatively recently in search of a better way of life. Respected for her strength of character, deep convictions and strong value system, the teenager works hard to exceed her own expectations.

“As a newcomer to the U.S., Tamesh challenged herself to meet people and become assimilated into the school culture,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor. “As Huntington is a diverse melting pot of ethnicities, socioeconomic strata and religious affiliations, Tamesh has comfortably adapted. I can’t say enough about this outstanding young lady. She is determined to succeed. She values education and the importance of learning. She is kind, considerate, reserved and focused on her goals, one day at a time. What an unbeatable combination!”

Ms. Zadran intend to launch her college studies at Farmingdale State University. She is known for placing her academic pursuits above everything else in her life and for her belief that hard work and putting in the best effort possible are an unbeatable combination when seeking a successful outcome.

Some of Ms. Zadran’s favorite classes were Living Environment and Chemistry as she hit it off with classmates and teachers. She set aside time to tutor fellow students in math and science. The teenager plans to pursue a career in medicine.
