Kathleen Acker is joining the Huntington School District’s administrative team as assistant superintendent for finance and management services. Trustees approved the appointment this past Tuesday night during a public meeting in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium.
Ms. Acker will assume her new position on August 3. She most recently served as principal of Walt Whitman High School since 2010, overseeing a staff of more than 250 and a student body consisting of more than 1,850 teenagers.
Huntington’s newest central office administrator was a business education teacher at Walt Whitman for six years, simultaneously holding down duties as the coordinator of the school to career and technology integration mentor programs. She was the South Huntington School District’s and Suffolk County Business Teacher Association’s Teacher of the Year in 2005.
Ms. Acker obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in management at Long Island University-C.W. Post College and a Master of Science in technological systems management at SUNY Stony Brook. She went on to earn an advanced graduate certificate in school district administration at Stony Brook and is studying in St. John’s University’s doctoral program. She obtained state certification as a business teacher through Dowling College.
“I am tremendously looking forward to having Kathie Acker join Huntington’s administrative team,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “She is a seasoned and committed educator with broad-ranging experiences, proven success in multiple capacities, and an outstanding work ethic. She is excited to be coming to Huntington and she will surely serve as an asset to the district in many regards.”
Prior to being named Walt Whitman High School’s principal, Ms. Acker served as the building’s assistant principal for six years. Before embarking on a career in education she worked for Grumman Data Systems in Woodbury for nine years as an analyst and as the chief executive officer and president of KC Awning Maintenance Co., Inc. in Blue Point for seven years.
Ms. Acker has maintained membership in the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, International Society for Technology in Education, National Association of Secondary School Principals and American Educational Research Association.
