Huntington School Briefs
Huntington High School Class of 2012 member John Deren McCarthy has earned a spot on the James Madison University President’s List for the fall semester. To qualify for the distinction a JMU student must carry at least 12 graded credits and earn a grade point average of 3.900 or above. A college junior, Mr. McCarthy is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in geographic science.
During his years at Huntington High School, Mr. McCarthy was a fine student-athlete, completing numerous Advanced Placement and honors courses and earning a spot on the high honor roll every marking period. A member of the National Honor Society, he also participated in Huntington’s environmental club.
Athletically, Mr. McCarthy played volleyball, basketball and lacrosse over the course of his high school years. He captained the volleyball team, receiving All-League, All-County and All-County Academic honors.
As the captain of the Blue Devils boys’ basketball team, Mr. McCarthy received All-League and Academic All-County honors. He was also recognized as a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete and was named one of the top scholar basketball players by the Western Suffolk Basketball Officials Association.
Alexa Gorczycki Thrives at Univ. of Maryland
Alexa Gorczycki always makes the most of her surroundings. The Huntington High School Class of 2014 member is thriving as a freshman at the University of Maryland at College Park.
“College is going great,” Ms. Gorczycki said. “It’s been an amazing transition.” The teenager’s fall classes included Calculus, Microeconomics, Sociocultural Anthropology, Academic Writing and Business Stock Analysis.
The Huntington alum has been working in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in a public relations position. She joined a campus business leadership organization as well as Maryland’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.
“The University of Maryland has a gorgeous campus with unlimited opportunities, in addition to all the welcoming people I have come to meet here” Ms. Gorzycki said.
Woodhull School Play
Woodhull Intermediate School’s drama club will present Annie, Jr. on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. Actors and stage hands have been rehearsing for weeks. The show promises to be outstanding. Interest is running high among students, parents and faculty members.
Julie Gray is Happy at Pace Univ.
Julie Gray, a member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2014, is happy with her decision to attend Pace University in Manhattan. She is studying public relations and communications and would love to one day be an editor at a fashion magazine
“Pace is amazing,” Ms. Gray said. “Living in the city was always the dream and I couldn’t be happier. I love being active and trying new things and being in the city that never sleeps is a huge benefit.”
The Huntington grad has traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and even Africa. Ms. Gray was one of the high school drama club’s mainstays. She completed numerous courses in Huntington’s fashion design program. She even served as treasurer of the Class of 2014.
“Everyone that is applying to college or are making decisions between schools should know that wherever they end up was meant to be,” Ms. Gray said. “You’ll find your way, no matter what, so relax and enjoy the rest of your high school career because those are four years you’ll never forget. College is definitely something to look forward to!”
