H-ton Senior Vincent Fredericks Volunteers for Tutoring
He’s a top young filmmaker and a fine volleyball and baseball player, too, but Huntington High School senior Vincent Fredericks just has a thing for the Spanish Honor Society.
One of the leading personalities in Huntington’s Class of 2016, Mr. Fredericks has been earning outstanding grades since he was in kindergarten at Washington Primary School. All these years later, the teenager is still at it; still excelling in and out of the classroom and still forging tight relationships with his classmates, teachers and coaches.
“I am an active member of the Spanish Honor Society at Huntington High School,” Mr. Fredericks said. “The club in general is one of the best I’ve ever had the chance to be a part of, but the activity that I personally get the most from is the bilingual tutoring.”
Although he’s a very busy young man, Mr. Fredericks always sets aside some time to volunteer. He has his own personal reasons for doing it.
“I’ve always been grateful to those who have helped me study and do homework when I had difficult topics that I didn’t understand,” Mr. Fredericks said. “Now that I have a well-enough comprehension of the subject material, it’s nice to be able to share and teach it, especially with the kids we tutor.”
Just like a “real” teacher, Mr. Fredericks feels good when he deals with a motivated student. “The fact that every person I’ve helped study so far has showed up so eager and wanting to learn is very inspirational to me as a student myself,” the senior said. “Overall, the student’s desire to learn and the society’s welcoming members creates a friendly and charismatic environment like no other; a truly one of a kind experience.”
Huntington teacher Mercedes Pena serves as the high school’s Spanish Honor Society faculty advisor. She depends upon Mr. Fredericks’ active participation in the organization’s initiatives and relies on his contagious enthusiasm and sense of humor, which has a way of putting everyone around him in a good mood.
Mr. Fredericks has not yet finalized his college plans. He is considering Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, Syracuse, Boston University, Temple and a few New England area institutions.
