Michael Nemaric is Headed for Tulane

Michael Nemaric had a thoroughly enjoyable experience at Huntington High School over the past four years, but just like his fellow members of the Class of 2015 the teenager is ready to move on to the next stage of his life.

Mr. Nemaric is headed to Tulane University in New Orleans and he’s excited. While he’s making the most of his final summer before college, the thoughtful young man often finds his mind drifting off to what awaits him in the “Big Easy.”

“During the whole college selection process, after I had gotten into Tulane in late 2014, I wasn’t really that interested in the school and was initially interested in attending Elon University in North Carolina,” said Mr. Nemaric when asked how he went about choosing the college.

“That all changed when I decided to be open to the idea of going down with my mom to New Orleans for a tour of the campus just to see everything in case we’d never be going down there again,” Mr. Nemaric said last week. “While down there, I was taken by the beauty of the campus as I was surrounded by positive students and plenty of palm trees and very warm weather. Not only did I immediately fall in love with the aesthetic beauty of Tulane, but also what the school had to offer and the great reputation of the business school as I look forward to majoring in international business.”

Mr. Nemaric said the orientation program he participated in at Tulane “went well” and it helped familiarize him with the academic and social aspects of the college. “They even took us to a bowling event as an ice-breaker to meet new people and get acquainted with one another before move-in day on August 21,” he said.

Some of the Huntington grad’s fall semester classes include calculus, The Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome, a required TIDES (Tulane Interdisciplinary Experience Seminar) business course applicable to any specialized major of interest and a required writing course the college believes will help spark student interest and engagement in different writing styles. “These are just some of the courses for the upcoming fall semester as I’ll then be taking one of the more advanced Italian classes at the university,” Mr. Nemaric said.

The teenager said what he will miss most about Huntington High School “are the plentiful resources that were at my fingertips, from extra help to Regents/AP review sessions right after school or even in the evening; the wonderful friends that I’ve made, the relationships I’ve developed with the numerous people in the school, and of course the teachers that I’ve been able to have in those four years, even leaving with some of them, too!”

Mr. Nemaric is wrapping up his second summer as a tennis camp counselor at SPORTIME in Syosset. He’s also been spending a “good amount of time with friends in Fire Island and at home,” he said.

“Overall, my experience at Huntington High School will be one that I’ll never forget from being a part of the varsity tennis team where we made it to the county quarterfinals this year and being able to solidify strong relationships with Coach [Jamie] Fishlow and my fellow teammates as well as being a captain on the team to building bonds with most of the teachers and people I’ve met through longtime friendships or extracurricular activities,” Mr. Nemaric said. “I’m proud to have been able to attend a high school that’s as diverse as Huntington and has certainly given me quite the real world experience.”
