Dynamic Duo Reinstates Paper Recycling at HHS

Mary Pulizzotto and Brendan Wirth are environmentally conscious teenagers. So when the two Huntington High School seniors learned that paper recycling had been discontinued in the building they mobilized for action.

Understanding that every small step counts when it comes to protecting the environment, the dynamic duo consulted with their science teacher, Craig McKee and decided to pursue reinstituting a small scale paper recycling program in a select group of classrooms and offices. Who knows? The initiative just might catch on and spread all across the huge three level building.

Ms. Pulizzotto is a member of the high school’s shared decision making committee. She and Mr. Wirth brought the paper recycling idea to Principal Carmela Leonardi through the committee, which enthusiastically embraced the initiative. Dr. Leonardi quickly signed on, too. But, there was a problem.

The Town of Huntington had little interest in picking up waste paper from the school in the past, which short-circuited the previous recycling program.

Ms. Pulizzotto and Mr. Wirth reached out to the town and discussed their recycling initiative with officials. A new procedure for paper pick-up was implemented. The waste paper will now be collected for recycling after school every other Tuesday and the town will cart it away the following morning.

The two seniors are hopeful the recycling program will take hold and flourish.
