H-ton Chamber Choir Garners Gold at Majors Festival

The Huntington High School chamber choir continues to impress audiences. The teenagers earned gold recognition at the New York State School Music Association Majors Festival at Bay Shore.

Under the direction of music teacher Veronica Mainville, the Huntington vocalists performed three NYSSMA Level 6 musical selections, including “Baba Yetu: by Christopher Tin, “Shenandoah” arranged by James Erb and “Elijah Rock” arranged Moses Hogan.

“I am beyond impressed and proud with this year’s chamber choir,” Mrs. Mainville said. “They performed a difficult and diverse Level 6 program, all without the aid of a piano. My students worked incredibly hard this year to earn this gold rating and they have made the Huntington school and community very proud. I am honored to be their conductor and am so excited about our spring concert on May 21.”

Mrs. Mainville has been teaching at Huntington High School since September 2009. She obtained a bachelor of music degree from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam in May 2009 and earned a master of music degree from Boston University in May 2013.

This year’s Huntington chamber choir consists of: Soprano I: Carolanne Buoniello, Shannon Contino, Melany Lanham-Ciancia, Christina Reinertsen, Emily Sager; Soprano II: Cassandra Berwick, Kaiya Idler, Meaghan McArthur, Kayla Ryan, Madeline Shea; Alto I: Miranda Cahill, Julia Dupree, Annalise Mozer, Madison Lofaso, Stephanie Powers; Alto II: Allyson Arleo, Chinasia Celestin, Olivia Liepa, Brianne Neira, Bailey Riordan, Meghan Scolo; Tenor I: Declan Byrne, Andrew Gunthner, Kyle Meit, Jose Salmeron-Zeron; Tenor II: Kevin McConnell, Osvaldo Moreira-Gonzalez, Landary Rivas; Bass I: Tazwar Akber, Andrew Aprigliano, Amaru Jones, Daniel Mollitor; Bass II: Nicholas Newell, Mitchell Robles, Diego Rodriquez, Benjamin Whitcher.

The NYSSMA Majors Festival, similar to the NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals is an established tradition of evaluating student achievement and performance.

Huntington’s chamber choir has performed at numerous district and community events during the current school year, showcasing an array of individual and group talents.

“This year’s chamber choir is such a strong ensemble and the students demonstrated their teamwork in requesting to participate in NYSSMA Majors Festival,” said Sarah Loveland Gill, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts.
