Huntington School Board Notes
Superintendent James W. Polansky provided a preliminary budget and tax levy limit presentation at the Huntington School Board’s December public meeting in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium.
Trustees adopted new district policies related to: Audit committee; Use of school district intellectual property; Testing misconduct and mandatory reporting requirements; Student evaluation, promotion and placement; Supervision of students.
Huntington High School faculty member Lori Kenny was honored by a representative of the National Association of Biology Teachers as New York State’s recipient of the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award.
The Huntington High School chamber choir under the direction of Veronica Mainville performed a well-received selection of holiday songs. The performance sent an upbeat tone for the meeting.
A contingent of Southdown Primary School students made a multi-media presentation highlighting various aspects of their current educational experience. The well-spoken youngsters commanded the undivided attention of both trustees and general audience members.
Trustees discussed the draft calendar for the 2015/16 school year. The calendar is expected to be finalized and adopted later this winter.
Trustees also took the following actions:
• Appointed Katelyn LaMay as a long-term substitute art teacher through approximately January 9.
• Recalled Nadine Araoz from the district’s preferred eligible list and increased her ESL teaching assignment to 1.0.
• Authorized post-season pay for athletic coaches Marissa Bergmann, Debra Cheskes, Jamie Fishlow, Christopher Helmke, John Pagano, Jason Suarez, Vincent Tannazzo, John Walsh, Shawn Anderson, Margaret McConnell and Kathleen Wright.
• Appointed Donna Gorelick and Judy Leopold as district-wide piano accompanists. They will be paid at a rate of $24 per hour.
• Appointed Joan Aurilia, Wendy Bonilla and Lindsey Adornetto as ESL Saturday Academy program teachers. They will work up to 40 hours at a rate of $49.95 per hour. The stipends are covered by a Title III LEP grant.
• Appointed Carmen Kasper to serve as the ESL Saturday Academy administrator. She will be paid $1,975. The stipend is covered by a Title III LEP grant.
• Authorized Carlos Claudio to work as an athletic even supervisor at a rate of $32.33 per hour.
• Appointed Gail Lennon and Julie Gaughan as seven hour teacher aides at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
• Appointed Ovidio Umana as a custodian. He was assigned to work nights at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
• Appointed Corina Garcia as a 10 month clerk typist in the ESL and World Languages department.
• Approved a salary schedule change for teacher Evelyn D’Andria, effective February 1.
• Appointed Donna Blair, Paula Maria Ferraiolo, Pina Keane, Anna Naccarato, Victoria Petruzzelli and Laura Lee Thompson to serve as Saturday Institute teacher aides.
• Authorized Lucyann DeChiaro to provide up to 34 hours of clerical services for the Saturday Institute.
• Appointed Huntington High School students Roxanna Aguilar, Darle Riordan, Arly Romero, Leah Thomas and Michelle Veliz to serve as stage crew aides. They will be paid $8 per hour.
• Authorized Christina Longobucco and Shetza Gedeon to serve as substitute food service workers.
• Authorized Linda Lombardi to serve as a substitute teacher aide.
• Authorized Kailey Castantine to serve as a substitute security guard.
• Authorized Jeanine Caras, Amanda Garcia, Dorothy Farias, Wendy Kaplan, Thomas Maloney, Bianca Margiotta, Patricia Miller, Anna Miranda, Brianne O’Connell, Hedy Rozbruch and Amanda Wright to serve as substitute teachers.
• Authorized that teachers Maria Canino, Christina Droskoski and Susan Llanes receive mileage reimbursement for their district related travel between school buildings.
