Huntington School District special education chairperson Renee Jones-Vaughans recently participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony at Developmental Disabilities Institute in Huntington for the organization’s new outdoor classroom. Many pre-school children from the district attend classes at DDI. The new playground unveiled at the ribbon cutting has been specially designed for pre-school children with disabilities.
Southdown Parent Academy Scheduled
Southdown Primary School’s first Parent Academy of the year will be held on Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 p.m. “The focus will be on the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts,” Principal Scott Oshrin said. “Teachers will share their expertise and unique skill set in various areas of English Language Arts instruction with Southdown parents.”
Parents are asked to RSVP by October 21 if they plan to attend. An event flyer is posted on the Huntington School District website.
“We hope that parents will take advantage of this outstanding opportunity to learn all about what their children are learning in school and how they can help at home,” Mr. Oshrin said.
Ninth Grade Parent Night
Huntington High School’s Ninth Grade Parent Night drew a crowd that came with questions about their child’s schedule and transition from middle school. Counselors discussed high school transcripts, graduation requirements and related topics. Parents gathered in the auditorium at 7 p.m. for a kickoff presentation.
Counselors later met with parents in small groups to review pertinent grade level information and to discuss how they can assist in maximizing student success. For more information contact Director of Guidance Kitty R. Klein at kklein@hufsd.edu.
Long-Term Substitute Teacher Appointed
Danielle Reminick has been appointed to work as a long-term substitute classroom teacher at Woodhull Intermediate School. She holds a BA degree in communications from Central Connecticut State University and a master’s degree in childhood education from Long Island University.
Ms. Reminick has worked as a substitute teacher in Huntington since September 2007. She has previously completed several leave replacement teacher assignments in the district. District officials reviewed 15 applications, pre-screened seven candidates and conducted five personal interviews prior to recommending Ms. Reminick for appointment.
Part-Time Physics Teacher
Thomas Liguori has been appointed to work as a part-time physics teacher at Huntington High School. He obtained both a BA in physics and a BS in adolescence education, 7-12 at SUNY Oswego in May 2014.
Mr. Liguori was a physics tutor at SUNY Oswego from September 2012 to May 2013. He was a substitute teacher and the head wrestling coach in the Red Creek Central School District from September 2011 to January 2014. He completed his state student teaching requirements in the Cicero-North Syracuse Central School District last spring.
District officials reviewed 26 applications, pre-screened nine candidates and conducted six personal interviews prior to recommending Mr. Liguori for appointment.
New Psychologist Joins Faculty
Christina Martino has joined the Huntington School District’s faculty as a psychologist. She is assigned to Washington Primary School and Woodhull Intermediate School.
Ms. Martino earned an Associate in Liberal Arts degree at Suffolk Community College in May 1999. She went on to earn a BS in psychology at Stony Brook University in August 2007 and a master of science in education in school psychology at Long Island University in May 2013.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Martino worked as a legal assistant and office manager at McGuire & Pelaez, P.C. in Central Islip for more than 15 years. She performed psychology fieldwork at Tree of Life Preschool in Commack and was a school psychology intern at Amityville High School.
Ms. Martino has worked as a leave replacement school psychologist at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville and as an independent consultant and clinician for Access 7 Services, Inc. She was a leave replacement at Developmental Disabilities Institute in Huntington and Ronkonkoma from November 2013 to May 2014.
District officials reviewed 25 applications, pre-screened 10 candidates and conducted five personal interviews prior to recommending Ms. Martino for appointment. She is eligible for tenure in September 2017.
Marching Band Wins Again
The Huntington Blue Devil marching band turned in another remarkable performance at an invitational last Saturday night in Mineola. The blue and white clad musicians and color guard members notched a score of 85.60, shattering their championship mark from last fall.
Huntington is headed to the New York State Field Band Conference Championships in Syracuse this coming weekend. The Blue Devils are undefeated this fall and hope to bring home a state title. Competition is expected to be fierce.
