Jake Ryan Adapts to Life at
Syracuse University

Jake Ryan has always shown the flexibility needed to adapt to the twists and turns of life. The Huntington High School Class of 2014 has successfully transitioned to being a freshman at Syracuse University, where he is doing well academically and socially.

“College is great so far,” Mr. Ryan said. “I’m taking Biology, Calculus, Research in Writing and Comparative Government and Politics, which is my favorite class. The hardest adjustment I had to make going into college is how to manage my time wisely.”

Mr. Ryan always manages to get all of his work done and earn solid grades. He’s knowledgeable on a variety of topics, making him a very good conversationalist. The teenager had a loyal circle of friends and teammates during his Huntington years. He’s already made many new friends at Syracuse, where he has perfectly blended into life on campus.

“I try and spend most of the weekdays in the library working so that I am free to have fun on the weekends,” Mr. Ryan said. The Syracuse campus is bustling with NCAA Division I sports, dozens of clubs and other organizations and students from across the world.

While the Huntington alum is officially “undecided” on a major, he plans to major in political science. “I am looking forward to taking another course next semester on that track,” Mr. Ryan said.

Syracuse was chartered in 1870 and has a total university enrollment of more than 21,000 students, including more than 14,400 full-time undergraduates.

“Since freshmen are not allowed to join Greek life first semester, I plan on pledging a fraternity in the spring,” Mr. Ryan said. “The one thing I’m looking forward to the most is the Syracuse basketball season starting, since I’ve been a fan almost my whole life.”

A varsity letter winner with the Blue Devil swimming and baseball teams, Mr. Ryan always wanted to go to Syracuse University since he was a little boy. He was accepted as an early decision applicant. The teenager said he wanted to go to a big school with an “exciting school spirit atmosphere.”

During his years at Huntington High School, Mr. Ryan was active in student government sponsored events, including Play Fest and homecoming. He also participated in Huntington High School’s Relay For Life.

The Huntington alum has dived into life at Syracuse, where he has hit the ground running. The affable Mr. Ryan has found plenty to keep him busy on campus.
