Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members have approved retirement requests submitted by Flower Hill Primary School teacher Anne Gordon, Huntington High School study hall and hallway assistant Kenneth Gilbert and J. Taylor Finley Middle School teacher aide Peggie Primm.

Trustees granted a leave of absence to Southdown Primary School teacher assistant Yesenia Cortes through the end of the school year so she could work as a long-term substitute teacher.

Trustees also approved the resignations of Washington Primary School head custodian Al Manzi, Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School nurse Deborah Bradley and Flower Hill Primary School teacher aide Louise Haagenson.

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Appointed Scott Oshrin to serve as Southdown Primary School principal, effective July 1.

• Accepted a donation to the district in the amount of $18,074.65 from the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education to support five different Star grants submitted by faculty members.

• Approved a request for proposal from Seneca Consulting Group in the amount of $14,500 for services related to the Affordable Care Act.

• Approved a request for proposal from Milliman, Inc. in the amount of $8,500 for actuarial services for Workers Compensation self-insurance.

• Accepted a donation to the music department of sheet music with an approximate value of $35 from Lawrence Orillia.

• Authorized the disposal of 63 obsolete science books.

• Approved establishment of a summer STEM enrichment program, which will run from July 14 through July 31 at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

• Approved the issuance of up to $25 million in tax anticipation notes for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. The proceeds from the notes will be used to fund district operations until receipt of property taxes collected by the Town of Huntington.

• Accepted a donation to the district’s music department in the amount of $1,500 from the Band Parents Association to fund the purchase of a new marimba and to cover expenses related to the repair of a timpani.

• Accepted a donation to the Huntington High School art department of photography equipment, including an enlarger and tripod with an approximate value of $200 from district resident and retired social studies teacher Gordon Goldsmith.

• Approved long-term substitute teacher assignments for Andrea Battista (elementary librarian), Matthew Bilello (Finley, science), Lisa Caporusso (Finley, special education), Vincenza Famiglietti-Caruso (Washington, classroom) and Matthew Liguori (Finley, science).

• Appointed Scott Sesterak as a night custodian at Woodhull Intermediate School, effective May 13.

• Appointed Alice Vandervelt as the district’s human resources administrator, effective June 2.

• Appointed Debra Rosen as Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School nurse, effective May 13.

• Appointed Gretchen Hannon (curriculum and instruction office) and Karen Hernandez (Huntington High School) as 10-month clerk typists.

• Authorized Huntington High School students Anna Brosoff, Fiona Geier, Christopher Glowacky, William Harris, Cindy Lopez, Taylor Moreno, Osvaldo Moriera-Gonzalez, Caroline Petrozzo, Diego Rodriguez, Mitchel Rudish, Jason Stickell, Kaitlin Wascher, Justin Weigold and Benjamin Whitcher to work as science lab assistants during the 2014/15 school year. They will be paid $8 per hour.

• Approved Lisa LoScalzo and Patricia Lucas to work as substitute teacher aides and Dara Brachfeld to work as a substitute teacher.

• Approved additional work for faculty members Caterina Cain, Kathryn Costa, Eileen Gonzalez, Philip Lowe and Vilma Matos related to the preparation and presentation of a parent engagement program during the current school year. The cost of the work is funded through a school improvement grant.

• Authorized faculty members Glenn Edwards and Donna Morro to engage in up to 10 hours each of curriculum writing related to second grade science.

• Established district English teacher Mariantoniette Morello’s probationary period as September 1, 2012 to September 1, 2015.
