February’s Washington Ways Award Winners Honored

While February featured a month of winter weather that many people would rather forget, students at Washington Primary School enjoyed a splendid set of weeks with a vacation thrown in for good measure.

Washington Principal Marsha Neville announced the names of February’s Washington Ways program honorees over the school’s public address system last week. The initiative focuses on recognizing and rewarding positive behavior while encouraging students to be safe, respectful and responsible.

The youngsters were excited to be recognized last week for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and throughout the building, including art, music, the library and gym and even the lunch room.

February’s honorees include Marciano Aloe, Jelana Silva, Shariff Penalo, Lillian Storey, Michael Ramirez, Brianna Velasquez, Gabriella Orellana, Ada Cruz, Erid Hernandez-Benitez, Alish Arenth, Josselin Escobar-Morales, Emily Veliz, Stephanie Wickey, Emma Hannigan, Aiden Delfino, Kevin Meza-Aparicio, Yobanis Granados, Kaylee Jones, Belendjy Geneus and Lena Rolden.

Mrs. Neville presented each student with a special certificate and then the group posed together for a commemorative photo. “It is also fun to recognize and reward students who have performed in an exemplary manner,” the principal said. “So many students are doing their best to win a Washington Ways Award.”

The classes of teachers Cindy Palmirotto and Joanne Tures were recognized as February’s Blue Ticket Award winners. Students are given various colored tickets by teachers and support staff members for exemplary behavior. The tickets can be presented to the youngsters at any point throughout the day.

White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.

Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including in hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate. Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall. The new program has quickly caught on and students enjoy being cited and collecting the colorful tickets.
