Sam Gergis Has Full Plate in
Business Office

As he enters his third year on the job, Sam Gergis has a full plate. The Huntington School District’s assistant superintendent for business is busy at work from early in the morning until late in the day.

Mr. Gergis assumed his post on July 1, 2012. Prior to coming to the district, he worked as assistant business administrator in Plainview-Old Bethpage, a position he had held since June 2008. He earned an undergraduate degree in economics at Boston University in 2001 and a Master of Arts degree in foundations of education at Hofstra University in 2006.

Employed by Amerada Hess Corp. as a commodities analyst from July 2001 to April 2003, Mr. Gergis was a financial analyst/controller at Morgan Stanley from April 2003 to April 2004.

In September 2004, Mr. Gergis became assistant dean of undergraduate admissions at Hofstra University. In November 2006 he was named assistant dean of new student support services at Hofstra and became the university’s assistant dean of undergraduate advisement in June 2007.

Mr. Gergis is studying for a Doctor of Education degree in educational and policy leadership at Hofstra. He earned a certificate of advanced study in school district business leadership in May 2008. He also holds a certificate in curriculum management and evaluation from Hofstra.

In his current job Mr. Gergis oversees implementation of Huntington’s annual budget and supervises the purchasing, insurance, payroll and employee benefits programs as well as the district’s food service, school security, technology and facilities operations.

“My focus this year will be on continuing the technology upgrades already underway, particularly the network infrastructure project approved by the voters in May,” Mr. Gergis said. “It is my vision that the Huntington School District will be in an excellent position for delivering instruction via the 21st century classroom model.”

Since coming to the district, Mr. Gergis has overseen many indoor and outdoor capital renovation, repair and reconstruction projects, including enhanced building level electronic security systems and a substantial upgrading of Huntington’s computer technology network and equipment.

“My other focus will be on our budget; monitoring expenses and utilizing our funds to best provide opportunities to our students and school community by addressing capital, infrastructure and instructional needs,” Mr. Gergis said about this year’s priorities.

Mr. Gergis closely collaborates with Superintendent James W. Polansky and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr. as well as the district’s building and departmental level administrators.

During his time in Huntington, Mr. Gergis has continued to pursue business office modernization as well as even tighter internal controls and procedures and strict financial management. He has led efforts to enhance Huntington’s culture of honesty and professionalism.

“Throughout the last two years, I’ve had the pleasure of working in a dynamic, progressive and supportive district,” Mr. Gergis said. “Outside of the business office, I have learned a tremendous amount about the Huntington School District, its students, staff and community. Working collaboratively has been more than beneficial; it continues to fulfill my personal goal of lifelong learning.”
