Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members have accepted a donation to the district in the amount of $500 from the family of Trustee Thomas DiGiacomo. Trustees took the action during a public meeting on Monday, April 7 in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium. The DiGiacomo family donation will be used by Huntington High School’s Devildroids robotics club to support its activities.

Trustees also approved several bid awards for various capital projects, including:

• Awarded a bid worth $593,300 to Watral Brothers, Inc. of North Bay Shore for the reconstruction of the Southdown and Washington Primary School parking lots.

• Awarded a general construction contract bid in the amount of $208,515 to Renu Contracting and Restoration, Inc. of Copiague for the reconstruction of a science room at Huntington High School.

• Awarded a plumbing construction bid in the amount of $95,000 to Ambrosio & Company, Inc. or Ronkonkoma for work related to the reconstruction of a science room at Huntington High School.

• Awarded an electrical construction bid in the amount of $57,642 to L.E.B. Electric, Ltd. Of Copiague for work related to the reconstruction of a science room at Huntington High School.

• Awarded a bid for cabinetry and equipment in the amount of $196,600 to J.S. McHugh of Hauppauge for work related to the reconstruction of a science room at Huntington High School.
Trustees also took the following actions:

• Authorized Southdown School teacher assistant Melissa Sarducci to return from a leave of absence effective April 28.

• Approved a contract with the certified public accounting firm of Cullen & Danowski for external auditing services for the 2014/15 school year. The firm will be paid $45,900 for its services.

• Approved a contract in the amount of $1,445 with CBIZ Valuation Group, LLC to provide fixed asset reporting and property insurance report updating service.

• Appointed Gail Bennington as the part-time STEM coach at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School effective April 8.

• Authorized Maureen Meyer (teacher) and Devon Nelson (custodian) to be added to the district’s substitute employee list.

• Appointed Shirley Xu Gambardella, Richard Gress and Anne Gunther to work as instructors in the district’s adult education program. They will be paid $25 per hour.

• Approved Vicki Petruzelli to serve as Woodhull School’s assistant drama club advisor.

• Approved additional work for teachers Joanne Cicio and Christine Lofaro related to Common Core student resource development. They will work up to 15 hours at $49.95 per hour.

• Authorized teachers Erik Bruckbauer and Helen Guarino to engage in two hours of Odysseyware training. They will be paid $49.95 per hour.

• Authorized teachers Keith Mattis, Donna Moro, Matthew Perlongo and Jennifer Poach to work up to 20 hours each in the district’s summer virtual learning program. They will be paid $49.95 per hour.

• Authorized teachers Angela Berner, Christopher Hender, Carol Soskil and Allison Von Vange to engage in scoring English Language Arts exams for up to two days each at $200 per day.

• Approved Samantha Ahrens (Finley, math), Michelle Audia (Southdown, classroom), Yesenia Cortes (Washington, dual language and Woodhull, dual language) to work as long-term substitute teachers.

• Approved an overnight field trip for the Huntington High School Devildroids robotics team. Eight members of the team along with its faculty advisor Judyann Pazienza and parent chaperone David Saginaw will participate in the US FIRST national robotics championships in St. Louis. The trip will run from Wednesday, April 23 to Sunday, April 27.

• Approved a consultant services contract with the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center in Oyster Bay for the “Raptors: Birds of Prey” presentation for Woodhull School students not participating in the Greenkill Outdoor Education Center trip.

• Authorized the addition of USA Lacrosse to the list of organizations approved to utilize district facilities.

• Approved numerous budget transfers to cover costs associated with Huntington High School administrative salaries ($130,000), an aide’s salary ($5,000), special education related mailing costs ($2,000), high school program for students with disabilities instructional salaries ($325,000), district transportation service non-instructional substitute salaries ($3,000), contracted transportation services ($50,000) and the high school robotics program ($2,100). Many of the transfers from one account code to another were requested by district auditors.

• Approved a license and operating agreement with SCOPE Education Services for a before and after school child care program for school-age children. SCOPE will pay the district a license fee of $900 for use of its facilities at Woodhull Intermediate School and Jefferson Primary School.
