Top Washington School Students Honored
The new school year has started off on an energetic note at Washington Primary School, where more than 400 students are hard at work in classrooms. A group of the school’s top young scholars was recently honored for their stand-out performance during the first few weeks of classes.
Washington’s student recognition program is a never far from the minds of youngsters in the school, who enjoy being honored for a job well done. Students also enjoy being able to congratulate a classmate for winning a special award.
As part of the Washington Ways program, students are given various colored tickets by teachers and support staff members for exemplary behavior. The tickets can be presented to the youngsters at any time throughout the day.
Washington Principal Marsha Neville took pleasure in reading off the names of the first batch of top students over the school’s public address system. Classes lined the hallways and cheered as the award winners were announced and headed down to the main office to pick-up a certificate and pose for a group photo.
“We had a great first month and these fabulous students played role in our success,” Mrs. Neville said. “Our students are inquisitive and energetic and our teachers and staff love working with them.”
September “red ticket” honorees included Kohanna Nakamura, Wynne Franciscovich, Theodore Hwang, Braid Martin, Roodes Similien, Josephine Sullivan, Nicholas Plachta, Anthony Addeo, John Song, Paola Rivas, Varun Ratti, Luis Linares-Avelar, Mikah Schueller, Gabriela Ferreira, Anaya Watkis, Milagro Alfaro, Yon Landi, Marques Gaskin, Lauren Holly and Emily Plachta.
Washington’s “blue ticket” classes for September included those of first grade teacher Miriam Engle and third grade teacher Susan Turner. “It was nice to be able to recognize these students and classes for their exceptional effort and work in the classroom and all around Washington School,” Mrs. Neville said.
Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate.
Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall. Students enjoy being cited and collecting the colorful tickets.
White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.
Students are back to working hard in October and hoping to win recognition in the next round of the Washington Ways program.
