Hi-Lume 50th Anniversary Celebration Benefits STEM School

The Hi-Lume Corp. of Huntington Station used its 50th anniversary celebration golf outing at Wheatley Hills Golf Club in East Williston to raise thousands of dollars to benefit Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, which has quickly earned the fierce loyalty of its students and their parents.

Last week’s outing honored Huntington School District Superintendent James W. Polansky, who was presented with Hi-Lume’s Building a Better Community Award. Founded in 1963 by Albert O. Sutherland, the company operates from a 25,000 square foot corporate office complex located at 20 Railroad Street, not far from Jack Abrams School.

The Hi-Lume Corp. was so excited by the establishment of the STEM school program that it quickly contacted Mr. Polansky and offered its support by naming the new school as beneficiary of the company’s 50th anniversary event.

“This was beyond a generous gesture by Mr. Sutherland and his staff,” Mr. Polansky said. “They believe in the program and wish to see Huntington students take full advantage of what it has to offer.”

Hi-Lume is a family-owned commercial carpentry company led by its president, Jim Sutherland, the founder’s son. The firm has accounts throughout the tri-state area.

While its original business was focused on supplying and installing luminous ceilings, the Sutherland Building Group has grown to include four companies. “As our businesses continue to serve the construction and building trades industries, there are two tenets we embrace: 1) Integrity must prevail as the cornerstone of a successful business and 2) one’s commitment to a community and its well-being must be ever present,” Mr. Sutherland said. “As part of our belief in ‘paying it forward,’ we are pleased to have this celebratory golf outing also serve as a benefit for the new STEM Magnet School in Huntington Station.”

Hi-Lume’s nearly 100 current employees provide a long list of services, including acoustical ceilings, drywall partitions and taping, doors, hardware and accessories, Armstrong ceiling products, metal ceilings, light and heavy gauge structural framing, standing seam roof systems, steel trusses, mansards, engineering, fabrication and erecting, interior and exterior panel systems, interior demolition, painting, shaft wall assemblies, insulation, fire-stopping, millwork, black iron and lath.

Joining the Hi-Lume company family at last week’s anniversary celebration were Mr. Polansky, Huntington School Board President Emily Rogan and district trustees Tom DiGiacomo, Bari Fehrs and Jennifer Hebert along with several PTA officials and Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School parents.

Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School’s initial enrollment totals 149 youngsters spread across grades three, four and five. Several sixth grade sections are expected to open for next September. The school strives for its students to become scientifically, technologically and mathematically literate. They will use scientific, technological and mathematical principles in real-life applications such as design engineering and service projects that will contribute to the community.
