Blue Devil JV Boys’ Soccer Romps
The Huntington High School boys’ junior varsity soccer team enjoyed an exceptional season, compiling an overall record of 15-2, including 13 consecutive victories.
Coached by Huntington alum Ralph J. Carino, the 23 member team was captained by Diego Rodriquez, Oscar Aguilar-Cruz, Jason Catarino and Jayvin Coto.
“This was an exceptionally gifted team, that showed great skill, strength and teamwork,” Carino said. “They communicated well and knew how everyone played on the field. This team was one for the ages. It was an honor to have coached them.”
The Blue Devils were buoyed by the strong play of Santos Garcia and Marlon Licona. Garcia is a superb center midfielder “who worked the hardest on the field out of everyone,” Carino said. “He’s a strong, physical player.” The teenager scored four goals this fall.
One of the top JV sweepers in the county, Licona is a “shutdown” defensive player, Carino said. Huntington notched eight shutouts over the course of its schedule.
After winning two non-league games to open the season, the Blue Devils dropped 2-1 and 3-0 contests to league foes East Islip and Half Hollow Hills West. Huntington then went on a long winning streak that saw the team avenge the earlier losses and skate past a long list of opponents.
The Blue Devils boasted a very talented lineup, fielding strong players at every position. The offensive leaders included a powerful goal-scoring group of sophomores. Rodriquez had 10 goals and seven assists. Coto tallied nine goals and three assists. Cruz contributed five goals and five assists. Nery Mayorga-Chacon added seven goals and three assists.
“I am fully confident in repeating a great season next year,” Carino said. “We have a great group of ninth graders returning, all of whom have stepped in and contributed a lot this past year.”
