Lou Puca is headed to the NCAA Division III wrestling championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 15-16. The 2011 Huntington High School alum, who now attends SUNY Cortland qualified for the national tournament by winning the 174 lb. title at the Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships at Worchester Polytechnic Institute.

Five of Puca's Cortland wrestlers will also be advancing the national tournament. The Red Dragons are ranked third in NCAA Division III. Cortland finished first among 18 teams in the Northeast Regional.

Puca finished second in the state as a Huntington junior and then was third in Suffolk as a senior. Seeded second in the Northeast Regional, the Blue Devil alum won his first bout by pin and then won 8-4 and 13-1 decisions before taking a medical forfeit over top-seeded Jules Doliscar of Ithaca.

Harvey All-League in Four Events

Noelle Harvey captured All-League honors in four separate events for the Huntington High School girls' swimming and diving team. The teenager was among the league's best in the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 100 breaststroke, qualifying the Section XI championships in all four events.

"Noelle has an excellent work ethic, speed and versatility," Huntington head coach Chris Helmske said. "She's a great backstroker and leading scorer."

Harvey is an eighth grader at J. Taylor Finley Middle School, but already making a statement on the varsity swimming team.

Fehrs to Attend Stevenson

Max Fehrs is headed to Stevenson University, which is located just outside of Baltimore, Maryland. The Huntington High School senior plans to play golf at Stevenson. The university has a total enrollment of more than 4,200 students.

Fehrs has been one of the Blue Devils' premier golf and tennis players throughout high school.

Emily Maggio is Versatile

Huntington High School junior Emily Maggio grabbed All-League honors in the 400 freestyle relay and went on to compete in the Suffolk swimming and diving championships in three different events.

"Emily is a versatile swimmer who continues to contribute to our team's success," Huntington head coach Chris Helmke said. One of Maggio's best events is the backstroke.

Devil's Den Needs Track Shoes

The Huntington Booster Club's Devil's Den is in dire need of boys' track shoes. Can you help? If so, contact Krista McDonald at kristamcdonald@optonoline.net or (516) 967-4045.The Den was created to provide equipment and supplies to any young athletes in need. Located in the basement of J. Taylor Finley Middle School, the 14x5 foot room is available to serve any student-athlete in grades 7-12.

If anyone does have boys' track shoes, they can be dropped off at the Finley main office or in the athletic director's office at Huntington High School or delivered through alternate arrangements by contacting Mrs. McDonald.

State Boys' Track Results

Huntington seniors Shaheem Lewis and Y'Majesty Allen returned home from the New York State indoor track and field championships without coveted medals, but their coach is still proud of them.

Lewis placed ninth in the shot put competition, throwing the weighted ball 50'10.25. Williamsville South (outside of Buffalo) junior Devon Patterson won the event with a toss of 60'01.

Allen finished in a tie for 14th place in the preliminary round of the 300m dash in a time of 36.52. The top eight finishers advanced to the finals.

Patricia Arceri is 5th in Suffolk

Patricia Arceri enjoyed a great season with the Huntington High School girls' swimming and diving team. She earned All-League honors in 1m diving and went on to finish fifth in Suffolk in the event. "Patricia is a great new addition to our diving squad," Huntington head coach Chris Helmke said.

What makes Arceri's accomplishment all the more impressive is that she is only a seventh grader. Her sister, Molly, won three Suffolk diving championships for the Blue Devils and finished second in the state as a senior. Molly Arceri is now diving at Towson University.
