PTA Council Presents Scholarship to Elizabeth Whitcher

The Huntington PTA Council has presented its Heart of Huntington Award to Huntington High School senior Elizabeth Whitcher, one of the top members of the Class of 2013.

Huntington PTA Council President Bari Fehrs announced that Ms. Whitcher is the recipient of this year's $300 scholarship at the 45th annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet held earlier this month in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Ms. Whitcher is headed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the fall where she plans to study biology. "Elizabeth embodies the mission of the PTA," Mrs. Fehrs said. "She is someone who is a good leader, a volunteer and a role model for her peers. She has made a strong commitment to Huntington High School and her community."

The teenager has earned varsity letters with the Blue Devil tennis and crew teams. Ms. Whitcher garnered the New York State Scholar Athlete Award in each of the past two years. She's also been a member of the high school's Natural Helpers and Habitat for Humanity clubs.

"This young lady takes great interest in helping those around her," Mrs. Fehrs said. "Although her demeanor is soft spoken, Elizabeth takes every opportunity to assist people both near and far."

The PTA Council scholarship was originally funded by monies raised at a refreshment stand the organization erected at the Special Olympics held at Huntington High School. This year the scholarship was built-into the PTA Council's budget. Individual school PTAs contributed funds toward it, too.

The PTA Council presented its first scholarship in 2011 to Dante Allen, who recently completed his sophomore year at Stony Brook University where he is a member of the football team. Last year's award went to Meghan Latini.
