Washington Students Honored
for their Ways

They wore big smiles when their names were called out over the school's public address system and strode to the main lobby like the champions they are. Washington Primary School's top students for December were honored by teachers and Principal Marsha Neville last week.

Among those recognized were Kaylee Smalling, Linzy Arias-Galvez, Jayden Roman, Anne Tyrell, Chase Williams, Harry Baliber, Carmine Carusone, Veronica Cocoman, Cicilio Alvares, Josh Redick, Leigh Hepworth, Heiddy Maldonado-Diaz, Jason Santos, Khaseem Montero, Jaclyn Mendez-Acosta, Brian Sosnowski, Jazmynn Clark, Rashiem Sexton, Trevor Cueto, Hector Erazo-Barahona and Noelle Boucetta.

The youngsters were honored for their sensational attitude and effort toward their school work and the responsibility they've demonstrated in the classroom and throughout the building, including the cafeteria and even on the playground.

The top classes in December included second grade teacher Patricia Maltempo and the morning kindergarten class of teacher Debbie Quiles.

December's award winners posed for a group photo that will be posted on the district's website along with the names of the honors. The photo will also be hung from a bulletin board in one of the school's hallways.

"It was wonderful to be able to congratulate these fine boys and girls for the great job they did in December," Mrs. Neville said. It was equally delightful to hear the applause from their classmates and the award winners walked down to the main office."

The Washington Ways student recognition program utilizes three different colors of tickets, which are a hot commodity around the school. Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate.

Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall. Students enjoy being cited and collecting the colorful tickets.

White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.
