The Huntington High School boys’ basketball team fell behind early, but rallied in the second quarter to take a 32-31 lead at Deer Park. Then the Falcons went on a 25-16 third quarter run to gain control of the game and go on to a 70-58 victory over the Blue Devils.
Huntington (3-1 league, 4-4 overall) was outscored by Deer Park (3-0 league, 4-2 overall) in the second half, 39-26. Patrick Reilly led the Blue Devils with 19 points. Devon Nelson had 13 points and Connor Birchard added 12 points. Kiernan McGovern (five points), Skylure Pannell (four points), Kenny McCarthy (three points) and Lee Reiver (two points) also scored in the game.
Islip Overwhelms HHS
The Huntington High School wrestling team was overwhelmed by host Islip last Friday night, 51-9. The Blue Devils won three of 13 bouts with decisions coming from Brandon Mendez (145 lbs.), John Mallouk (160) and Nick Lupi (220), who won a 2-1 overtime match.
Huntington’s Kyle Mock (7-4), John Arceri (3-2 overtime), Tyshon Parker (11-9), Carlos Pereira (5-3), Jorge Villela (5-0) and Anthony Puca (4-2) all lost close matches.
Filippini is Perfect
Huntington’s Brent Filippini went 3-0 in sabre to lead the Blue Devil boys’ fencing team past host Walt Whitman, 15-12. James Ferraiolo and James Montefusco each finished 2-0 in epee for Huntington. It was the Blue Devils third win in four meets this winter.
Blue Devils Stunned
Verizon FIOS was there filming the game and Newsday sent a reporter to cover the contest. The Huntington High School girls’ basketball team appeared headed to victory after building a 21-12 first quarter lead over visiting Deer Park. Then it happened.
The Falcons (3-1 league, 5-3 overall) narrowed their deficit to 27-21 after three quarters and then went on a 25-10 fourth quarter run to grab a 46-37 win over the stunned Blue Devils.
Heather Forster’s nine points led Huntington (2-2 league, 6-2 overall), which also received scoring from Mackenzie Maloney (six points), Caitlyn Knowles (four points), Katie Nugent (four points), Raynisha Witherspoon (four points), Joellen Ceide (three points), Katie Reilly (three points), Brooke Baade (two points) and Tara Byrnes (two points).
HHS Girls’ Fencers Impressive
The Huntington High School girls’ fencing team improved to 3-1 with an 18-9 victory over Walt Whitman. Rachel Feltman and Kelly Askerberg were unbeatable in sabre as each finished with a 3-0 mark on the afternoon.
Girls’ BB Game Moved
The Huntington High School varsity girls’ basketball game scheduled for Thursday, January 24 at 6 p.m. in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium has been moved to NorthSport on 25A in Northport (north side of 25A across the street from Stop & Shop). Game time remains 6 p.m.
The game is being moved because the Huntington High School gym is unavailable on that date due to hundreds of desks being placed across the court so students can take January Regents exams there.

Coaching Appointments
The Huntington School Board has appointed Charles Maccio to serve as the assistant varsity softball coach and Travis Smith as the assistant coach of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School boys’ “blue” lacrosse team.
