Huntington School Briefs

Retired Huntington School District teacher Eleanor N. Carrizzo passed away on October 17. She was 85 and resided in Huntington Bay.

Mrs. Carrizzo was an English teacher at Robert K. Toaz Junior High School, Robert L. Simpson High School and Huntington High School for 33 years. She retired in 1991.

Born in Garfield, New Jersey on August 18, 1928, the Huntington faculty member served as a tutor, summer school teacher and yearbook club advisor during the course of her professional career.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Carrizzo served as recording secretary of HARTE (Huntington Association of Retired Teachers and Employees) and wrote a memoir about her teaching experiences called The Chalkboard Retreat. Her family intends to have the book published in her memory.

Visitation was held at M.A. Connell Funeral Home in Huntington Station. A funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington village. Interment was private.

December Pride Awards

Several dozen Huntington High School students were recognized during this month’s Pride Awards ceremony. Physical education, business, technology and health teachers presented the December awards.

Each month each teacher within a selected department can recognize as many as five students whose academic progress, effort or example cries out for public acknowledgement.

Though it is up to each instructor, the general criteria for receiving a Pride Award has included a demonstration of exceptional effort, improvement in performance or being an outstanding role model.

The honorees included Lilliana Rodriquez, Olivia Arciprete, Michael Lonergan, Irina DeSimone, Caitlin Knowles, Marie Catherine D’ennery Dejoie, Robert Marcus, Olivia Castillo, Robert Desmond, Daniel Hochman, Tateana Khokhar, Dixon Doblas, Colin Guy, De’Vante Miller, Thomas Plant, Thomas Kouttron, Roxanna Aguilar, Alexander Kalas, Alyssa Amorison, Dylan Collier, Jessica Marroquin, Vanessa Aguilar, Anthony Perna, Judith Andrade, Declan Byrne , Exzayvian Crowell, Gunther Cassell, Collin Francis, Desenia Villatoro, Kelly Tenbus, Taivon LaPalmer, Carlos Viera-Pereira and Thomas Dayton.

Santos Garcia Avelar, Christian Gudiel-Rivera earned multiple Pride Awards.

Sophomore Class at Holiday Parade

The Huntington holiday parade drew a crowd in excess of 10,000 to the village area and the Huntington High School sophomore class was there to distribute free hot chocolate and candy canes on a frigid night.

Class of 2016 officers Alexander Berwick (president), Daniel Mollitor (treasurer), Kelly Palladino (corresponding secretary) and Katie Reilly (recording secretary) were joined by sophomore class administrative assistant Meghan Plant and classmate Brianna McDonald. The teenagers stood in the cold and help spread holiday cheer to the throngs attending the parade.

Teachers Eric Bruckbauer and Camille Tedeschi serve as the sophomore class faculty advisor.

Next BOE Meeting

The next regularly public meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium. A detailed agenda and related materials will be posted on the Huntington School District’s website in advance of the meeting.
