Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School District teachers Christine Barresi and Deborah Mellon are retiring, effective June 30, 2014. Huntington School Board members approved the faculty members’ retirement requests during a public meeting on Monday, December 2.

Trustees also approved retirement requests submitted by Woodhull School teacher assistant Kathleen Turner (effective February 15, 2014) and Huntington High School security guard Robert Giarraputo (effective March 1, 2014).

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Appointed Travi Roethel as principal of Woodhull Intermediate School, effective approximately February 3, 2014.

• Approved Paula Nickerson to work as a substitute principal at Jefferson Primary School where she will fill in for Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide while she is on a child care related leave of absence.

• Appointed Conrad Dierking (Woodhull, classroom), Maria Lorandini (Huntington High School, foreign language), Vincenza Famiglietti-Caruso (Woodhull, classroom) and Christine Droskoski (Flower Hill, reading) as long-term substitute teachers.

• Appointed Michael Ferreira to work as a long-term part-time substitute technology teacher at J. Taylor Middle School.

• Approved changes in assignment for food service workers Araceli Espinal and Claudia Contreras.

• Appointed Donna Moro as the elementary science coordinator through June 2014. Her $4,000 stipend will be funded through a Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness state grant.

• Approved a special education services contract with the Syosset Central School District.

• Authorized the superintendent of schools to attend the annual school law conference of the Suffolk & Nassau Academies of Law on Monday, December 9 in Mineola.

• Authorized the superintendent of schools to attend the winter law conference of the New York State School Boards Association on January 9, 2014 at the Islandia Marriott Long Island.

• Adopted for use in the Huntington School District the Records Retention and Disposition Schedule ED-1, pursuant to Article 57-A of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law. Records will be disposed of only after they have met the minimum retention period and “only those records will be disposed of that do not have sufficient administrative fiscal, legal or historical value to merit retention beyond established legal minimum periods.”

• Approved budget transfers to cover costs association with Huntington Highsteppers’ dance team competition and participation fees, the director of fine and performing arts trip to the NYSMMA conference in upstate New York and National History Day registration and travel expenses.

• Approved teacher Beth Minoff to work as a tutor for a homebound student.

• Authorized Gloria Wilson (security guard), Matthew Metz (teacher), Catherine Alexander (teacher) and Lauren Soskil (teacher aide) to work as substitutes for district employees on an as-needed, per diem basis.

• Approved Carmela Leonardi to serve as coordinator of “family involvement” through the end of the school year. The $7,500 stipend will be funded through a Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness state grant.

• Approved Soraya Triessl to serve as coordinator of Parent University through the end of the school year. The $3,500 stipend will be funded through a Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness state grant.

• Approved Suzette Biagi (professional teacher) and Lauren Baglivi (novice teacher) to serve as transitional student coaches through the end of the school year. Each respective $3,500 stipend will be funded through a Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness state grant.
