Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members approved probationary teacher appointments for Tara Fisher (special education at Huntington High School), Jessica Rivera (dual language program teacher at Woodhull School) and Donna Mazur (librarian at Woodhull and Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School). The probationary periods of the new teachers will run for three years until September 1, 2016.

Trustees took the actions at their public meeting this past Monday night in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School large group instruction room. Trustees also discussed and approved implementation certification of the district’s annual professional performance review plan. They also reviewed a revision to the district’s Dignity for all Students Act policy.

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Approved part-time faculty appointments for teachers Virginia Mallia (.6 foreign language at the high school), Adam Sherrard (.3 PE and .1 health at the high school) and Suzanne Knoerzer (.4 math at Flower Hill and Washington Schools). The appointments are effective for 2013/14 school year.

• Approved salary schedule changes for teachers Lauren Amendola, Lynn Corsetti-Hendricks, Kenneth Donovan, Terence Doran, Joann Ferazi, Mariana Irigoyen, Chelsea Jablon, Maria Lanzot, Veronica Mainville, Amanda Meyer, Donna Moro, Erika Sabogal and Ashley Williams who each either completed a set of graduate level courses or obtained a master’s degree.

• Accepted the resignation of Huntington High School art teacher Devin Auricchio, effective August 16.

• Awarded a bid for refuse removal to Progressive Waste Solutions of L.I. for the period that runs from October 1 through June 30, 2014.

• Approved the hiring of security guards Jerome Merkerson (Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School) and Tyquan Pearson (Finley), effective September 1.

• Authorized Huntington High School teacher aide Juanita Turner to return from a leave of absence, effective September 1.

• Approved budget transfers to cover costs associated with excess copies and service contracts for copy machines at Huntington High School ($10,750), excess copies and service contracts for the high school library copiers ($4,400), charter school tuition that is required to be reported under a separate ST-3 code ($20,000), textbooks and supplies for the Saturday Academy ($20,000) and science kits and other resources for non-STEM schools ($40,000).

• Approved the hiring of school nurse Deborah Bradley, who will work at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

• Granted a leave of absence to Jefferson School dual language program teacher aide Yesenia Cortes through approximately November 1 so she can work as a long-term substitute teacher.

• Approved the hiring of long-term substitute teachers Michelle Audia (Southdown classroom through January 16) and Yesenia Cortes (Jefferson dual language through approximately November 1.)

• Approved a change in assignment for Kim Valerio who will work as a part-time (.5) art teacher at Huntington High School.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Dr. Michael Rosenfeld of Melville. He will be paid $175 per hour for neuropsychological/psycho educational evaluations.

• Authorized the disposal of two unusable FAX machines.

• Approved an amendment to the district’s 403b retirement plan.

• Approved $600 of “start-up” funds for the district’s school lunch program.

• Approved the transfer of $491,637 from the district’s Worker’s Compensation fund to the general fund for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013.

• Approved Jessica Castaneda to work as an instrumental music director.

• Approved Jonathan Swengler to work as a summer band camp instructor.

• Approved Scott Bergersen to work as a fall music pit instructor.

• Appointed Michelle Wenz to work as a math teacher at Huntington High School and J. Taylor Finley Middle School during the 2013/14 school year.

• Appointed Matthew Liguori to work as a part-time (.4) science teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.

• Appointed Susan Nastro to work as a part-time (.4) English teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.

• Approved part-time appointments for Antoinette Frazier, Regina Marek and Dawn Coleman who will all work as three-hour monitors. Ms. Frazier will be employed at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and Ms. Marek and Ms. Coleman will work at Southdown Primary School.

• Approved dozens of coaching appointments.

• Approved temporary changes in assignment for Jason McDonald (to head custodian of Washington School) and Daniel Pacheco (to chief custodian of J. Taylor Finley Middle School), effective August 1.

• Approved additional work for clerical employee Jane DeMarco related to preparations for the opening of Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

• Appointed Gail Mahoney as program administrator of the McKinney-Vento homeless grant and Alexandra Cope as a home tutor in the program. Both appointments are for the 2013/14 school year.

• Approved a change in assignment for clerical employee Theresa Campsey from a 12-month position in the Huntington High School guidance office to a 10-month position in the high school science and instructional technology office.

• Appointed Matthew Harris as an AV technician for 2013/14.

• Appointed Regina Askerberg as the adult education program’s secretary and approved Anna Naccarato and Trudy Micheletti-Sommers to work as substitute secretaries.
