Corrao Honored in National Peace Essay Contest
Huntington High School sophomore Elizabeth Corrao is one of two New York State honorable mention award winners in the National Peace Essay Contest.
Ms. Corrao is a student in an Advanced Placement World History course taught by Camille Tedeschi. "Liz is talented and creative and participates in class discussions and activities on a daily basis," Ms. Tedeschi. "She is a great student and a wonderful writer."
This marks the second year that Ms. Corrao has been in one of Ms. Tedeschi's classes. The pair worked together last year in a freshman honors world history course.
"The Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding is the education and training arm of the United States Institute of Peace and runs the National Peace Essay Contest based on the belief that questions about peace, justice, freedom and security are vital to civic education," according to the organization's website. "Each year over 1,100 students submit entries to the essay contest while thousands more participate in related writing and other classroom exercises in high schools around the country."
"The United States National Peace Essay Contest is a challenging and prestigious research competition," Ms. Tedeschi said. "Liz worked hard in developing her topic, thesis and research." One of the goals of the essay contest program is to provoke student discussion about the complexities of international peacemaking.
Ms. Tedeschi's students have participated in the National Peace Essay Contest for the past three years, earning honorable mention state honors each time. The contest presents one first place and two honorable mention awards for each one of the 50 states.
Students enrolled in Ms. Tedeschi's classes have won numerous honors in recent months. "It has been a very exciting school year with these amazing students," she said.
