Homecoming Floats Will Be Remembered

Huntington High School's 2012 Homecoming Day celebration is now but a warm memory. However, the colorful floats that were featured in the parade through the village and up New York Avenue will always be fondly recalled by the students who participated in the effort to build the four units.

This year's homecoming theme was "super-heroes" and students on each grade level were creative in working together to design their floats and then building them at the school over a five-hour period on a stormy Friday night.

In a somewhat surprising upset, the sophomore float was crowned the winner of the annual competition, which traditionally has gone to the senior class. A distinguished panel of judges awarded the sophomore float 328 points, a mere five points more than the seniors, who earned a very respectable 323 points. The junior (299) and freshman (265) floats trailed in the balloting.

The Class of 2013 entered a float celebrating Superman. The float featured the ever-popular super-hero depicted in his traditional uniform and colors. Stephanie Rafuse serves as senior class president. Teachers Donna Nugent and Lauren Desiderio are the class advisors.

The Class of 2014's Big Green Fighting Machine included a touch of The Hulk. It was a massive, 10-foot tall beast of a creation. Alex Castillo serves as the junior class president. Teachers Gina Colica and Victoria Lombardi are the class advisors.

The Class of 2015's Spiderman float featured the super-hero wearing his traditional skin-tight red and blue costume. The sophomores were coming off their much-heralded entry in the 2011 Homecoming Day parade. Mickey Mouse nearly upset the Class of 2012 in last year's competition. Joe Saginaw serves as class president. Librarian Patricia Dillon is the class advisor.

The Class of 2016 created a Batman themed float. It was a well-received effort and included the super-hero's famed Batman logo. Alexandra Berwick serves as class president. Teachers Eric Bruckbauer and Camille Tedeschi are the class advisors.

Following the parade, the floats were parked along the west side Blue Devil Stadium, near the Oakwood Road exit.
