Huntington School Briefs

The Highsteppers, Huntington High School's competitive dance team, performed to loud applause at the school's pep rally last Friday afternoon in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium and also at halftime of Saturday's Homecoming Day football game in Blue Devil Stadium.

Ashley Angstadt, Alexandra Smith and Alexa Gorczycki are this year's Highsteppers' captains. The squad is coached by Ali Greenstein and Lora Ayala.

Woodhull Club Advisors Appointed

Faculty advisors for the Woodhull Intermediate School club program have been appointed by Huntington School Board members. The advisors include Christine Barresi (student government), Scott Armyn (student government), Paul Esposito (School of Rock), Allison VonVange (director, drama club), Tomarah Castillo (assistant director, drama club), Todd Hiscox (art club and drama club scenery and stage crew) and Keith Meyers (AV coordinator).

New Teacher Appointment Approved

Huntington School Board members approved the appointment of Susan Nastro as a long-term substitute English teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School through approximately October 19. She holds undergraduate (English) and graduate (English education) degrees from Stony Brook University.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Nastro worked as a substitute teacher in the Middle Country and Hauppauge school districts and as a leave replacement English teacher at Hauppauge High School.

District officials reviewed 250 applications, conducted 25 pre-screenings and interviewed seven candidates prior to recommending Ms. Nastro for appointment.

Reach for the Stars Advertising

The Huntington Foundation is soliciting ads for its Reach for the Stars gala journal. This year's gala and journal will honor former Huntington School Board member and PTA official Christine Bene. HHS Music Advisors Named

Faculty advisors/directors have been named for various Huntington High School performing groups and organizations, including Brian Stellato (wind ensemble, Tri-M music honor society and instrumental director), Lisa Leonardi (chamber orchestra), Veronica Mainville (choral director, jazz choir and Tri-M music honor society), Jason Giachetti (jazz ensemble) and Michael Alfieri (winter percussion).

NSSBA Resolutions Dinner

The Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association will hold its annual resolution dinner meeting on Thursday (October 4) at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury. David Little, director of governmental relations for the New York State School Boards Association will be the evening's guest speaker. There will be a special presentation by Gary Bixhorn, chief operating officer of Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

BOCES Meeting

The next meeting of the Western Suffolk BOCES Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, October 9 at 7: 30 p.m. in the large conference room at the Western Suffolk BOCES administrative complex located at 507 Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. The seven elected members of the Board of Western Suffolk BOCES are responsible for establishing policies governing the programs and services offered by the agency. In most cases meeting agendas are posted on the Friday before the Tuesday meeting. Minutes are posted after they have been approved.

Mini-College Day Slated

The Huntington High School College Counseling Center will host a mini-college fair on Thursday, October 25 during periods two and three at the school. The following institutions have confirmed their attendance: Adelphi University, University of Alabama, Albertus Magnus College, Assumption College, Briarcliffe Collge, Castleton College, Drew University, Five Towns College, Hartwick College, Hofstra University, Island Drafting & Technical, James Madison University, Johnson & Wales University, King's College, LeMoyne College, Lesley College, LIM College, LIU Post, Lynn University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Mercy College, Molloy College, Monmouth University, Moravian College and SUNY Morrisville.

Also planning to attend is Mount Saint Mary College, Nichols College, Nova Southeastern University, Rider University, Saint Leo University, Salisbury University, Salve Regina University, St. John's University, SUNY Albany, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Maritime, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Old Westbury, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Plattsburg, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Purchase, University of Rhode Island, University of Scranton, University of Tampa, Virginia Commonwealth University, Wagner College and Western New England University.

Next BOE Meeting

The next public meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams School auditorium. Members of the public will be able to address trustees. A detailed meeting agenda will be posted in the days leading up to the meeting on the district website at www.hufsd.edu.
