The Huntington High School girls' basketball team is having trouble scoring. The Blue Devils were limited to just seven second half points in a 35-25 loss to Centereach in a game played in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Huntington made up a four point first quarter deficit by halftime with a 12-6 run that gave the Blue Devils an 18-16 lead. But, a failure to put the ball in the basket cost the team dearly as the dropped the non-league contest before a midday vacation week crowd of about 100.

Ellyn Byrnes, a 5'9 freshman forward, scored nine points to lead Huntington. Freshman Caitlin Knowles and senior Laurelle Byrne-Cody each scored four points, respectively.

An Exhausting Vacation

"It's been an exhausting vacation," said Ron Wilson, Huntington's boys' winter track and field coach. The Blue Devils participated in several competitions and enjoyed a long list of stand-out performances. "But I must say, it's been nice watching our young men perform at these meets. They are progressing nicely. This month, we have to start tweaking our performances for the post-season. Winning medals at these competitions is good, but winning at the league, division, county and state championships is even better. If we are to do just that, then we have to work a little harder in preparation for success at the championship levels."

Goldstein & Co. Win

The Huntington High School boys' swimming team lost a close meet to East Hampton in the first contest of the season. The Blue Devils' 200 yard medley relay team of Jake Goldstein, Gunther Cassell, Todd Colvin and Mike Sullivan grabbed first place.

Goldstein and Cassell also captured two first places in individual events. Goldstein established a new school record in the 100 yard backstroke and now holds five of the eight individual records. Colvin dominated the 100 yard butterfly, touching the wall first.

Huntington Wrestlers Go 3-2

The Huntington wrestling team defeated Port Jervis (54-33), Goshen (65-23) and Middletown (45-30) at the Tri-State Holiday Duals at Port Jervis. The Blue Devils and Mahopac ended in a 39-39 tie, but Huntington lost on criteria as a result of dropping 8-of-15 bouts. Huntington also lost to Valley Central, 49-32.

12 Points for Casey in Loss

Bellport was too much for the Huntington boys' basketball team to handle as the Clippers topped the Blue Devils, 65-49 in the League IV opener.

Huntington trailed 15-7 after eight minutes of play and was down 31-22 at halftime. The hole got deeper in the third quarter as Bellport went on a 19-9 run to open a gaping 19 point advantage.

Sophomore David Casey scored 12 points to lead all Blue Devil scorers. Sophomore Trevor Bryant added 10 points. Juniors Connor Birchard and Devon Nelson and senior John McCarthy each scored seven points, respectively.

Huntington's Offense Stalls

Heather Forster and Katie Nugent each scored six points, respectively, as the Huntington girls' basketball team's offense stalled out against visiting Bellport.

Huntington played good defense in the opening quarter, but could never get its offense firing on all cylinders. The Clippers opened a double digit lead by halftime, en route to a convincing 55-36 victory in the League IV opener for both teams.

The Blue Devils found themselves down by more than 20 points in the second half and were unable to make up much ground. Ellyn Byrnes and Mackenzie Maloney each pumped in five points for Huntington.

Huntington's 100 Relay Wins

The Huntington boys' swimming team dominated the annual Relay Carnival, taking first place in five of 12 events. In the 100 yard backstroke relay, Tyler Meyers, Matt Muszynski, Mike Sullivan and Todd Colvin captured gold. In the 100 yard medley relay, Tyler Mayer, Gunther Cassell, Jake Goldstein and Mike Sullivan easily swam past all opponents.

The 200 yard butterfly relay of Gunther Cassell, Thomas Scott, Norman Vasquez-Gomez and Jake Goldstein grabbed the top place. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Gunther Cassell, Dan McCartney, Thomas Scott and Jake Goldstein also claimed first place.

Huntington capped off its amazing performance with a victory in the 200 yard medley relay as Jake "The Goldfish" Goldstein carried his teammates on his back with a blazing effort.

Girls Find Their Stride

The Huntington High School girls' track and field team found its stride during a meet at Suffolk Community College-West.

Maia Cadle-Hinton was third in shot put and Hayley Drace finished seventh in triple jump and 55m high hurdles. Jacqui Gomez placed eighth in the 55m high hurdles while Emani Mency was 10th.

In the 3000m run, Suzie Petryk ran "an outstanding race," according to Huntington head coached Debra Cheske, and placed third. Caitlin Yabroundy was 10th in the race-walk cutting 10 seconds off the school record that she already owned.

The 4x400m relay team of Katie Healy, Alexandra Kousmas, Morgan Mars and Kerri-Ann Giambruno finished second. The 4x200m relay team of Dania Merilan, LaToya Shand, Catherine Koumas and Samantha Glicker was third. A second 4x200m relay squad of Emily Maggio, Lexi Milles, Ally Berwick and Rachel Boisclair finished sixth.

Emma Hughes Drops 13 Points

Huntington's junior varsity girls' basketball team won its first game of the season, topping visiting Bellport, 38-20. Emma Hughes scored 13 points for the Blue Devils.

Arceri & Lupi Carry Huntington

The Huntington wrestling team outlasted Newfield in the first league dual meet for both teams, 42-27. Eighth grader John Arceri earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision at 99 lbs. Senior Nick Lupi, who finished second in Suffolk last February, picked up a pin in 4:59 at 220 lbs.

Blue Devil wrestlers Corey Jamison (9-2), Kevin Mendez (4-2) and Asher King (8-3) captured decisions. Joseph Puca pinned his opponent at 145 lbs. in 3:50.

Newfield forfeited the 106, 113 and 120 lb. weight classes, handing the Blue Devils 18 points.
