Huntington School Briefs

The 2012/13 Huntington High School Parent-Teacher-Student Assn. will be led by President Alice Marie Rorke, Vice-Presidents Maryann DeSimone and Nancy Shivers, Recording Secretary Laura Mills, Corresponding Secretary Laurene Napurano and Treasurer Debbie Knowles. Lorraine Corbly and Dolores Breslin will serve as the HHS PTSA's PTA Council delegates.

New HHS English Teacher

Huntington School Board members have approved a probationary teaching appointment for Mariantoniette Morello. She will teach English at Huntington High School. Her three year probationary period runs until September 1, 2015.

Ms. Morello obtained a BA degree in English/secondary education in May 2003 at Queens College and a MS degree in education, also at Queens College in May 2006.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Morello worked at Leonardo da Vinci Intermediate School 61 in Corona, Queens as a ELA teachers for grades 7-8, literacy coach and ELA/AIS seventh grade teacher. She was also employed as a leave replacement teacher at J.W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport, Roslyn High School and Paul Schreiber High School in Port Washington.

Prior to recommending Ms. Morello for appointment, Huntington officials reviewed 250 applications, pre-screened 25 candidates and conducted seven personal interviews.

Alum Gets Married

Megan Dibernardo, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2003, married Grant Poirot in Boulder, Colorado while surrounded by fellow Huntington grads.

"It was a beautiful ceremony held at the Lionscrest Manor, overlooking the mountains of Colorado," said Shawn Anderson, a 2001 Huntington alum who coaches the Blue Devil cross country and boys' track teams.

"Lionscrest Manor is a picturesque mountain wedding venue, on a luxurious and private 50-acre Victorian estate, located in Boulder County Colorado, just minutes from Denver and the foothills," according to the facility's website. "Surrounded by Hall Ranch Open Space, Lionscrest Manor provides unbelievable 360-degree views, offering your wedding guests unparalleled ambiance and serenity at your wedding.

Also attending the wedding were Huntington alums Shannon Boyle (2000), Lauren Dibernardo (2001) Eric Selhorn (2003) and Devan Weber (2003). Lauren Dibernardo was the maid of honor and Ms. Weber was a bridesmaid.

The bride is a personal banker and the groom is an IT engineer. "It was a special celebration," Mr. Anderson said. "Perfect weather and a lot of fun."

Huntington Foundation Board of Directors

Maria Cassar will serve as president of the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education's board of directors during the 2012/13 school year. She is joined by fellow officers Sheri Lewis-Taylor (vice president-grants administration), Janice Kimchy (vice-president-marketing), Denise Stieve (vice-president-marketing) and Karann Pashkin (treasurer).

Huntington Foundation school liaisons include Mrs. Lewis-Taylor (Woodhull), Liz Fiordelisi (J. Taylor Finley), Michael Grassi (Washington), Charlie Menacho (Washington), Robin O'Leary (Jefferson), Nancy Shivers (Jefferson) and Lisa Karasik (high school). Melissa Ryan will be the liaison director.

Laurene Napurano will chair the Huntington Foundation's Reach for the Stars gala and serve as the organization's webmaster. Mrs. Fiordelisi has been named the gala's co-chair.

The Huntington Foundation board of directors also includes Karen Dwyer, Shari Harris and Marilyn Maggio.

SCOPE Membership

The Huntington School District will once again be a member of SCOPE Education Services. The membership year runs from September through the following August.

According to its website, SCOPE "is a not-for-profit, private organization permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to provide services to school districts. Founded in 1964 by school superintendents, it is a cooperative venture for sharing resources to deal with common concerns."

The district will pay a membership fee of $3,840 for the year. Membership benefits include various publications, discounted tuition for School Board members, administrators and teachers at SCOPE conferences, seminars, workshops and special events, discounted fees for customized staff development program and School Board seminars, access to user-fee programs such as teacher and administrative placement, child care, management and demographic studies, longitudinal financial analysis, security-safe school assessments, fingerprinting of new employees, outdoor learning programs, child abuse prevention courses, continuing and adult education programs, paraprofessional training and assorted other programs and services.

Western Suffolk BOCES Meeting

The Western Suffolk BOCES Board of Education will hold a public business meeting on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the large conference room of the administrative office complex of Western Suffolk BOCES located at 507 Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. The public is invited to attend.
