Wilson Named Director of
Special Education
Nancy Wilson will be able to hit the ground running, that's for sure. The Huntington School Board named the veteran teacher and administrator as the district director of special education and student support services, effective July 1. Trustees took the action during their public meeting this past Monday evening.
Ms. Wilson, who has served as the department's assistant director for many years, will take over from Dr. Vicki L. Mingin, who is retiring after more than three decades in the district.
Employed by the district since 1995, Ms. Wilson began her career in Huntington as a special education teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. She has experience as an inclusion and self-contained teacher in math, social studies, science, English, reading and study skills/organization.
"Ms. Wilson is highly respected by students, parents, and colleagues for her knowledge of special education law and programs and for the manner in which she looks to address the needs of every child," Superintendent James W. Polansky said. "I look forward to working with her in her new capacity for years to come."
A 1992 graduate of Acadia University (BA in psychology/special education), Ms. Wilson earned a Master of Science degree in 1995 at Long Island University's C.W. Post campus in special education.
Ms. Wilson has also been employed by Western Suffolk BOCES, coordinating special education services and teaching high school age students in a resource setting and has worked as a program coordinator at the Eddie C. Moore Day Treatment Center.
In addition to her work as a teacher and administrator, Ms. Wilson has coached girls' lacrosse and field hockey on both the high school and middle school levels and served as a faculty advisor for Finley's yearbook and environmental clubs.
Ms. Wilson has been listed in Who's Who among America's Teachers and been the recipient of the Special Education PTA's Distinguished Service Award.
