Successful Launch for Café Point of Sale System

The Huntington School District's cafeteria program serves thousands of hot and cold meals a day and now it has officially joined the computer age.

"This week we successfully implemented the Nutrikids point of sale system in both the high school and Finley cafeterias," said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services.

The names of all students in grades 7-12 have been entered into the system by the district. Parents/guardians are encouraged to deposit money into the student's account via an online pre-payment system at www.nutrikids.com.

The district evaluated various computerized point of sale systems with the goal of improving the level of service and providing accurate school meal accounts. Following a stringent review process, officials decided to purchase the Nutrikids system.

"Point of sale terminals exist on each of the three serving lines at the high school, two serving lines at Finley and in the teacher cafeterias in both buildings," Mr. Grackin said. "The representative from Nutrikids was on-site for four days from hardware set-up through software set-up and actual 'go-live' implementation."

Oscar Giraldo, the district's food service consultant from Whitsons and district computer technician Noreen Heffernan were also "very involved in the [implementation] process," Mr. Grackin said.

Questions about the new program should be directed to the School Lunch Office at 673-2107.
